Job summary
The man function for this role is to provide
clinical leadership to the whole dental network in Bridgewater. In addition ,
the appointee will be able to influence the strategy for service development
across Greater Manchester and Cheshire and Merseyside.
You will be a member of the Dental Management Team
along with the Lead Nurse and the Director for Dental Services. You will manage
the Clinical Directors for GM and C/M along with the Network lead dentists for
Special Care, Oral Surgery and Paediatric Dentistry.
The responsibilities of this post include, but are
not limited to, Quality, Clinical Governance (including a focus on clinical
audit and clinical effectiveness ) leading on dental appraisal, investigation
of serious Incidents and management of poor performance (in conjunction with
the Medical Director).
The dental services include specialised and
specialist special care and paediatric dentistry, bariatric services,
domiciliary care, sedation and GA for adults and children. Bridgewater has an
ambitious strategy to develop modern, clinically effective community dental
services across Greater Manchester and Cheshire and Merseyside, and this role
is at the forefront of that ambition.
In addition to clinical leadership activities, you
will be expected to be clinically active and demonstrate flexibility in
response to service needs.

Liaise and work with the Medical Director to ensure clinical quality and clinical delivery are maintained and improved across the service.
Liaise and work with the Head of Dental Service to ensure an effective, safe service is delivered to the Trusts patients.
Work clinically in your area of specialism and with general community dental services patients, demonstrating your professionalism and leadership skills to your team. Support all your team members in the delivery of excellent clinical care for patients.
Management & Leadership
Provide clinical leadership to services operating across multiple sites, with several staff groups and providing a varied portfolio of differing clinical services.
Undertake appraisals, personal development plans and job plans for senior clinicians in the dental service.
Provide advice about:
- The legislative framework (for example in relation to GDC Standards) to support on such matters to other members of the dental team.
- Specialist registration and the provision of specialist and specialised care.
Work with:
- Other corporate support services in Bridgewater, for example in dealing with complaints and incidents.
Manage:
- Clinical performance, including the quality of care.
- The clinical service, including horizon scanning.
- External relationships with senior managerial and clinical colleagues, including Operational Managers in Bridgewater and Commissioning Teams.
Provide support and direct input to:
- Dental Clinical Governance meetings focusing on audit and clinical performance.
- Finance, Workforce and Planning meetings.
- Team meetings
- Any other such groups that may be established in Bridgewater.
Clinical
This will include:
- Examination assessment and treatment of special care and paediatric patients whether referred to the service or retained for long term care. This will include patients with complex medical co-morbidities and complex patient management issues.
- Provide care under sedation and GA and in domiciliary settings.
- Provide up to date and evidence-based restorative, periodontal, prosthodontic, and simple minor oral surgery procedures for the above patient groups.
- Implement programmes to prevent disease and promote health in these patients.
- Delegate work appropriately and efficiently to DCP colleagues (Dental Nurses, Hygienists and Therapists) such that the efficiency of the clinic is maximised.
- Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques, equipment and drugs.
- Be responsible for organising training and resources in support of the availability of sedation in all or part of the sector.
- Undertake appropriate assessment of patients to determine the need for specialist referral or advice.
Communication
Communicate effectively with the following.
- Clinical teams and peers in relation to clinical and/or leadership situations.
