Job summary
A position
has become available for a Band 6 Specialist Children in Care Nurse to join the
experienced Warrington Children in Care team which was established in November
2016.
This is a
specialist role requiring an enthusiastic, caring and dynamic nurse with a high
level of professional skills who is able to work autonomously and also as part
of a team. The candidate will need to demonstrate a strong commitment to Children
in Care whilst providing a comprehensive health service to the children in care
population. The successful candidate will need to be a strong advocate for children
in care. The successful applicant will be at the forefront of improving the
quality of service delivery and helping to shape future service provision.
The overall aim of the
Children in Care team will be to ensure that the health and well-being of
children in care in Warrington is delivered to the highest possible standards, ensure
the voices of children in care are heard and thread throughout all the work the
team undertake, developing great community services and ensuring that everything
we do is based around our aim of quality first and foremost.
The Specialist Children
in Care Nurse will have access to clinical supervision, safeguarding supervision,
restorative supervision and management 1:1s.
The Trust is committed to staff and provides several
health and wellbeing options for staff to access when required.
Main duties of the job
The Specialist
Children in Care nurse will be a team player and responsible for assessing, planning
and evaluating the care for children in care placed in Warrington and on occasions
Warrington children placed in neighbouring boroughs.
Undertake
statutory health assessments for children in care aged 5 -18 years in Warrington
including children placed in Warrington from other local authorities.
Contribute
to the IHA clinic undertaken by the Named Doctor for Children in Care.
Provide
advice and support to foster carers on the needs of individual children.
Contribute
to the delivery of foster carer training.
Support
young people to manage their health once they leave care including the provision
of a health passport.
Attend
Care planning meetings for children in care and initial care plannings meetings
for those children who are NEET and become subject to care arrangements.
Provide
review meeting up to date health reports for children in care as required.
Liaise
with health professionals across the health economy and multi-agency partners
outside of Warrington when required.
Work
closely with multi agency partners in social care and the virtual school.
As a team
player, support colleagues in the team including working closely with the
Lead Specialist Nurse to ensure statutory functions completed and performance
indicators collected including 903 data.

Job Purpose:
The post holder will work with children, young people, their carers and a wide range of professionals across health and social care settings to ensure that looked after children and young people (Known in Warrington as Children in Care-CIC) receive the appropriate services in order to reach their full potential as outlined in Promoting the Health and Well-being of Looked After Children 2015 and the Intercollegiate competencies for looked after children (revised 2020).
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of health care for CIC and care leavers. The overall aim is to ensure that children in care, care leavers and unaccompanied asylum seeking childrens health needs are met and positive outcomes are achieved for this vulnerable group.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate healthcare for CIC, formulating a holistic health care plan for school aged CIC, post 16 young people and care leavers.
2. To support CIC and their carers with the appropriate health advice, information, signposting and referral.
3. To support social work colleagues in ensuring that any health needs identified at childrens initial or review health assessments are promptly addressed with ongoing follow up and reviews.
4. To attend new into care planning meetings and assist with the compilation of information to inform the completion of quality Initial health assessments.
5. To attend and /or provide a written report for any statutory CIC health reviews/care planning meetings or CSE/ Missing from care strategy discussions for CIC
6. To ensure that all CIC are up to date with their immunisations and to organise/and or administer outstanding immunisations in line with the Department of Health guidelines.
7. To establish a drop-in facility in childrens homes
8. To monitor emotional health and stability by interpreting the strengths and difficulties questionnaire scores (SDQs) liaising with the Lead CIC specialist nurse/childs social worker.
9. To attend meetings on behalf of the band 7 CIC specialist nurse in periods of her absence.
10. To Work in conjunction with the Lead Specialist nurse for CIC participating in the delivery of CIC training and the ongoing professional development of health professionals, social workers and foster carers.
Leadership
1. Provides professional leadership and health advice and support to health professionals including health visitors and school nurses and social workers within health and social care settings.
2. Works with a legal, professional and ethical framework established by relevant bodies. e.g. Department of Health, Nursing and Midwifery Council and local health trust policies.
3. To assist and participate in any audits for improving the quality standards for health services for CIC.
4. To Participate in regional and local strategic planning groups within CIC nursing.
5. To Support and encourage community involvement in decision / policy making including the involvement of children/young people and carers.
Clinical Practice
- To work autonomously within own practice, Responsible for managing a caseload of children and young people in care (school aged, 16+ Not in Education Employment or training (NEET), and Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) )
- To undertake comprehensive health assessments on CIC both in borough and those CIC placed within Warrington from other local authorities in line with good practice and reciprocal working arrangements.
- To make clinical decisions to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role, supported by relevant evidence based practical theories.
- To adopt a flexible approach to working which may include travelling out of borough on occasions, or working evenings or weekends, in order to engage with young people and facilitate their access to health services.
- To be responsible for the recording of personally generated clinical observations and the maintenance of relevant nursing records and reports.
- To exercise independent prescribing rights in accordance with relevant legislation.
