Job summary

The Medical Appraisal Lead will provide leadership across the trust regarding all aspects of medical appraisal. The post holder will advise the Medical Director, who is the Trusts responsible officer on compliance with appraisal and revalidation. They will assist the Medical Director in supporting doctors and dentists who required additional input into appraisal.

They will offer guidance and assistance to the Medical Director when doctors and dentists are involved in regulatory or disciplinary matters. They will be an active member of the Medical and Dental Professional Governance Group meetings, contributing reports as needed.

The Trust is in the relatively rare position of employing or appointing Consultants, General Practitioners and Dental Officers. The candidate will deal with these three groups of professionals, but with the majority of time spent on Consultant appraisal. The Trust does not expect candidates to be an expert in all elements of appraisal for these groups but will expect an understanding of the different groups and a willingness to learn about the different groups.

Main duties of the job

Managing the activity of medical and dental appraisers to defined and quality assured standards, including, but not exclusive to:

Promoting excellence in medical and dental appraisal to deliver robust revalidation recommendations and improvements in patient care through the

professional development of doctors and dentists.

Recruiting and selecting medical appraisers.

Assisting the Clinical Directors for Dentistry in selecting dental appraisers

Organising and/or delivering competency based new appraiser training.

Monitoring performance of existing appraisers, ensuring that appraisals are conducted in line with national, regional and local guidance, and that regular feedback is provided.

Promoting and supporting the continuing professional development (CPD) of medical and dental appraisers.

Promoting the benchmarking of professional judgements between medical and dental appraisers through the provision of resources and opportunities to learn with and from others.

Supporting and facilitating local medical and dental appraiser support group meetings, directly or indirectly.

Answering queries from appraisees and appraisers.

Working closely with the Business Manager to the Medical Director, the post-holder will promote, support and facilitate the implementation of national and Trust appraisal policies and ensure a robust quality assurance process is implemented for medical appraisals. They will ensure that each doctor aligned to Bridgewater for appraisal and revalidation has an allocated appraiser and that appraisals are completed in a timely manner.

The Medical Appraisal Lead will undertake appraisals with a defined number of doctors each year, as agreed with the Medical Director. They will set exemplary standards for the conduct of appraisals across the organisation and will support the Medical Director in delivering their roles and responsibilities towards appraisal and revalidation.

The Medical Appraisal Lead will also work with the Clinical Directors for Dentistry and the Medical Director, to ensure that dental appraisal can demonstrate positive adherence to the same robust quality assurance processes that medical appraisal aligns to. All dental appraisals will be undertaken within the dental service and the postholder will not be expected to undertaken any dental appraisals unless agree specifically with the Medical Director.

They will be an active member of the Medical and Dental Professional Governance Group meetings, contributing reports as needed. They will also be expected to participate in other aspects of medical governance and to engage with partners in accordance with organisational need and as directed by the Medical Director.

  • Dealing with significant events and complaints, in conjunction with the Medical Director and Business Manager to the Medical Director Team.
  • Keeping abreast of local and national developments in appraisal and revalidation.
  • Promoting quality assured appraisal and revalidation process to doctors and

  • Representing the Trust at local, regional and national initiatives relating to

the development and implementation of appraisal.

  • Networking with other Appraisal Leads and their teams to maintain

standards of delivery of appraisal across NHS England.

  • Liaising with medical educators and their networks on issues relating to

continuing professional development (CPD) for doctors and dentists being appraised.

Accountability and Review

The Medical and Dental Appraisal Lead is responsible to the Bridgewater Medical Director and ultimately to the Trust Board. An appropriate job plan will be agreed with the post-holder on an annual basis by the Medical Director or their deputy.
