Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust

Children's Therapy Assistant

The closing date is 25 Medi 2025

Job summary

Leeds Community Healthcare Childrens Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Teams are looking for enthusiastic and motivated people to work in our Integrated Childrens Additional Needs Service (ICAN).

We provide therapy services to children 0-19 years with mild, moderate and complex needs, including long term neurodevelopmental conditions. Children and families can access the service in a variety of venues including health centres, schools, nurseries, home settings and other community venues.

Due to the community nature of our service a U.K. car drivers licence and access to a vehicle are essential.

You will work with registered therapists and assistants to complete an induction period, following which you will work independently, providing delegated therapeutic approaches that will enable the child and family to meet their goals.

The Physiotherapy assistant role is a physically demanding job, requiring candidates who can comfortably work in a variety of positions at floor level to engage children in activities e.g. developing balance and learning to move between different positions. You will be required to work on a trampoline and in a hydrotherapy pool to deliver specific interventions.

The Occupational therapy assistant will support the child to maximise their participation and independence in self-care, school work and play and leisure. Intervention takes the form of advice, direct therapy sessions, and demonstration of equipment.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants must be excellent communicators and have a sense of fun and innovation to engage children, young people and families in their therapy care. You will recognise and respond to changing clinical situations, liaising with all members of the multidisciplinary team as needed to support children and young people to achieve and succeed.

We offer a comprehensive induction including completion of the Care Certificate followed by ongoing clinical and managerial support from experienced specialist staff, regular in-house training and opportunities to be involved in service development. You will be expected to work independently after induction; managing your own diary and responsibilities. You will deliver a range of interventions in a fun and creative way which, depending on the role, may include land-based blocks, rebound and aquatic physiotherapy and workshops. The Physiotherapy assistant will also support orthotics clinics across the Hubs, including managing orders, appointments and physically assisting the orthotist.

The occupational therapy assistant will support the delivery of clinic assessment appointments and group workshops and monitor the equipment reviews. Candidates will be confident and competent working with IT programmes such as Word and Excel; using online meeting platforms e.g. Microsoft Teams, email & SMS. Candidates will be good at learning new IT skills e.g. Electronic Patient Record (SystmOne) if they are not already familiar with this.
