Job summary

To provide an effective and comprehensive school nursing service to a defined population that meets the needs of the local community in line with the Health Child Programme.

To provide and manage a defined caseload, using a public health approach to provide and maintain a high quality service that promotes the physical and mental health of the Youth Offending Service & Electively home schooled children.

To provide health screening/surveillance, health promotion and to support the health needs of any young people within the caseload as well as participating in the safeguarding process.

Main duties of the job

  • Identify health needs of the very vulnerable children and young people that attend :
  • Youth Offending Team
  • Children excluded from school where appropriate
  • Home schooled where parental permission is given
  • Children who are NEET

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current UK NMC registration
  • Specialist community public health practitioner qualification- school nursing/Health Visito
  • Evidence of continuing post-registration education and training
  • Mentor training

Desirable

  • PSHE credited course
  • Evidence of other post registration education and training in specialist areas e.g. Epilepsy, allergy's

Experience

Essential

  • Recent school nursing experience
  • Multi-agency and inter-agency working
  • Managing a safeguarding caseload
  • Experience of teaching in community settings
  • Be able to co-ordinate health promotion initiatives in line with local and national health improvement targets

Desirable

  • Experience of innovative practice or project management

Skills and knowledge

  • Current knowledge of child protection guidelines
  • Knowledge of NMC Code of Professional Conduct
  • Knowledge of how equal opportunities can be implemented in practice
  • Knowledge of the public health agenda and the health care needs of individuals in the community

  • Knowledge of managing difficult situations and conflict resolution
