We have a term-time only (30 hours during term time) Band 3 School Nurse Assistant post based at Sudbury Primary Care Centre. Central London Community Healthcare is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and innovative practitioner to join the School Nursing Service in Brent.

Main duties of the job

The School Nursing service comprises of skill mix teams that are structured to deliver core and targeted health input through the Healthy Child Programme to all school aged children and their families, including health promotion, vision and hearing screening as well as the National Childhood Measurement programme.

Our skill mix teams include: School Nurses, School Staff Nurses and School Nurse Assistants. Under the 0-19 Universal Services umbrella you will also work with Health Visitors, Community Staff Nurses-Health Visiting, Community Nursery Nurses and Admin colleagues. We also work closely with the Brent Weight Management Team and Safeguarding Advisors as well as our partners in education and children's social care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The School Nurse Assistant is expected to:

  • Contribute to the on-going assessment of a child by completing the appropriate electronic templates for allocated children, recording and reporting all clinical and behavioural information to the School Nurse for action and planning purposes
  • To undertake, and report back on delegated clinical activities that have previously been signed competent, e.g. lead and undertake the weighing and measuring of children (NCMP) in schools, complete vision and hearing screening in primary schools and refer on appropriately for follow up, provide health promotion advice and guidance to school children, parents and teachers. To enable children and parents to make the most effective use of resources within the service by ensuring they receive up-to-date information and to respond to any questions constructively
  • To pass onto/seek assistance from other colleagues promptly in respect of any questions that you are unable to resolve
  • To support the School Nursing team in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme
  • To liaise and refer children to Opticians and the Audiology clinic as appropriate in accordance with local procedures
  • To use clinical judgement and skills to report any identified concerns or changes in childrens health status immediately to the relevant School Nurse
  • To collect data from children/ parents for recognised outcome measure and document for School Nurses to interpret, this will include data collected form the NCMP programme delivery
  • To provide support to parents with children who may have identified behavioural concerns by maintaining a calm, safe environment and reporting back to the School Nurse as indicated
  • To plan and implement straightforward tasks and work guided by standard operating procedures and protocols and undertake roles/duties as delegated by a team leader
  • To undertake a variety of clinical intervention tasks after achieving appropriate competencies delegated by a nurse.
