We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the Brent Children's and Young People's Occupational Therapy Team. We are looking for a Band 5 Occupational Therapist to work full time, however part time will be considered.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and developing new skills. Your role will be to provide assessment, advice, and treatment to children with a range of needs including coordination, developmental, physical functional, sensory and sensory motor needs either in 1:1 input, groups or integrated MDT groups. The role will include work within a local clinic, schools and supporting families across Brent.
You will work closely with established multi-professional teams within Brent Community Services and with outside services to deliver occupational therapy advice and treatment meeting the needs of children and young people across Brent including delivering EHCP treatment in line with The Children's Act 2014. You will have had experience of working with children in the community and/or educational settings or similar. You should be able to evidence excellent team working and communication skills and have a passion for management and leadership.
You will receive support from a line manager and receive in house training as part of the role. There is a strong ethos of clinical support and supervision within the team.
Main duties of the job
To support provision of a high quality paediatric occupational therapy service to a caseload of children and young people with occupational therapy identified needs including children and young people with occupational therapy outcomes identified in their Educational Health and Care Plans (EHCP).
To carry out specific assessments and interventions with children and young people, as delegated by a senior Occupational Therapist, in person or by videocall.
To carry a caseload and work independently in a variety of settings, to support children and young people's occupational therapy needs as appropriate including occupational therapy needs for CYP as outlined in their EHC plans.
To support and work with Occupational Therapy Assistants to implement therapy programmes to identified children and young people.

- To carry out standardised assessments as appropriate and interventions with clients referred to the team in a home, clinic or nursery/school setting.
- To provide written reports detailing assessment outcomes and goals for treatment, some of which may link to their EHCP outcomes.
- To work under the guidance of a senior Occupational Therapist to ensure competency in using a range of practical skills (e.g. fine motor skills, gross motor skills, co-ordination skills, developmental skills, sensory skills, self-help skills)
- To follow up learning and development activities as recommended. To develop and maintain a base level of theoretical knowledge about common conditions and their implications eg: neurological conditions such as ASD/ ADHD/ developmental delay/sensory processing, Cerebral Palsy, Genetic Disorders etc.
- To devise written home/school treatment programs for children requiring them.
- To work under the guidance of a senior Occupational Therapist, independently carrying out visits to school or home to hand over to carers, intervention activities or programs for the child and to gain parents/carers/schools co-operation in their intervention.
- To work under the guidance of a senior Occupational Therapist developing judgement and analysis skills for appropriate action to be taken.
- To devise written school treatment programs for children requiring them.
- To work under the guidance of a senior Occupational Therapy, independently carrying out visits to school to support education staff with intervention activities or programs for the child and to gain schools co-operation in their intervention.
- To identify appropriate equipment and educate children, parents, carers and school staff in the use of this equipment (e.g., pencil grip, rulers, scissors, theraputty, slope board, Move n Sit cushion, theraband, etc) in order to maximise the childs independence and access to education.
- To manage a caseload using clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessments using a client-centred approach and current evidence-base to assess, treat, implement, evaluate and document Occupational Therapy interventions.
- To ensure that parents, carers, relevant medical and educational staff, and other professionals are informed of outcome of assessment and treatment in a timely way.
- Use effective interpersonal skills to encourage parents, carers, and school staff in active participation during the Occupational Therapy process, including the specific provision and receipt of complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and their families using negotiation and training, empathic and reassuring skills.
- To independently explain the purpose and content of assessments and programs to children, parents, carers and school staff to maximise childrens outcomes and answer a variety of related questions using tact and sensitivity.
- To be able to motivate parents/ school staff through effective communication skills, utilising verbal, and non-verbal skills, with communication tailored to the carers level of comprehension or cognition e.g., using interpreters or differing communication approaches.
- To be responsible for raising and discussing children considered or suspected to be at risk of maltreatment with Supervisor and or Safeguarding team. Documenting and following up any identified areas of concern and outcomes of discussion or liaison with carers and professionals
