The SPA will act as the central hub for coordinating clinical referrals, triaging urgent needs, providing advice and directing patients to the right services at the right time. Whether you're answering a call, reviewing referrals, or coordinating rapid support, you will play a key role in ensuring patients and professionals receive timely, efficient, and compassionate responses.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide expert clinical triage and decision-making for adult patients referred to SPA with same-day, urgent, or unplanned care needs.
  • Support assessment of high-risk or complex cases, providing senior input and escalation where necessary.
  • Supervise and advise non-medical clinicians (e.g., ACPs, Band 6 clinicians) on triage decisions, clinical queries, or referral pathways.
  • Participate in or lead case discussions with specialist consultants via telephone MDTs to ensure robust decisions for complex patients.
  • Promote a "right care, first time" approach that aligns with community-based care, hospital admission avoidance, and timely referrals.
  • Work collaboratively across sectors - including primary care, community services, ambulance services, social care, mental health, and acute providers.
  • Make direct referrals into community, mental health, urgent community response (UCR), hospital at home, intermediate care, and other appropriate services.
  • Contribute to developing and refining clinical pathways and escalation protocols within the SPA.

About us

The General Practitioner working within the Single Point of Access (SPA) will play a central role in the clinical validation of referrals received from NHS 111, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and other healthcare professionals. The postholder will assess clinical information, validate dispositions, and ensure patients are directed into the most appropriate clinical pathway, balancing safety, timeliness, and effective use of healthcare resources.
