Job summary
This post has two positions available within Birmingham Dental Hospital & School to contribute to the delivery of Periodontal services for the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands. The post will be graded as a Specialty Dentist grade with support for personal development and progression. This post will be held on a part time basis.
You will join an enthusiastic team, who are world leaders in research and who are passionate about providing high quality outpatient care in the Periodontal Department and may contribute to the teaching supervision of junior staff and dental undergraduates.
Within the Dental Hospital all of the dental specialities are represented by Consultant led Departments. Excellent liaison exists with Clinical and Laboratory Departments within the Acute NHS Trusts in Birmingham and a comprehensive range of investigative and reporting services are available.
Main duties of the job
The appointment will be as a Specialty Dentist on a part time basis under the employment of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder may be involved in new patient consultant led diagnostic and treatment planning clinics. They will manage a wide range of specialist Periodontal cases under the supervision of consultants working within the department.
The postholder will be expected to give advice and assistance to members of the junior dental staff in training within the Department as the need arises. The appointee may be expected to participate in the clinical teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, to recruit patients for clinical trials and to take part in clinical research from time to time.
Departmental administration and routine correspondence with referring Practitioners will be required, for which secretarial support is available as part of the Restorative Team.
As a teaching and research unit, Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry undertake a wide range of research activities for which excellent facilities are available. Whilst the duties of this post are primarily of a service nature, opportunities to pursue research are included, within the Periodontal Research Group. An interested appointee will be encouraged to pursue their interests, subject to the needs of the service.

Essential
- Fully registered with General Dental Council (GDC).
- The post holder should have completed at least four years' full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable
- Fellowship in Dental Surgery, MFDS or equivalent.
- MSc in a Restorative discipline.
- Inclusion in GDC Specialist List for Periodontics.
Experience
