Job summary

The Radiology department is looking for an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic radiographer to join our friendly and supportive team. Where we aim to deliver a successful, high quality radiology service, delivered from the BDH site.

Teaching various students dental radiography forms a key part of the role so a commitment to teaching and personal CPD to update knowledge is essential.

The successful candidate will require a high level of clinical imaging (experience in Dental & Maxillofacial imaging is desirable,) and IT knowledge. The existing systems include the Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS), Radiology Information System (RIS) and various communication and specialist reporting services used in the Division.

The appointee will be expected to work a flexible shift pattern between the hours of 8.00am and 8.00pm, to suit service requirements.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should have a BSc or DCR(R) in Diagnostic Radiography, be State Registered (HCPC) and have previous post-graduate experience. They must be a team player who is able to work on their own initiative. The post holder will be expected to provide supervision and mentorship for various student groups. As a specialist hospital the appointee will be expected to provide a high standard of radiography in all dental, maxillofacial, temporomandibular and salivary gland views undertaken, to ensure that all patients receive the maximum care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. Provide a high standard of radiography to ensure that all patients attending the x-raydepartment and outreach centre receive the maximum care. Specialised views include dental, maxillo-facial, temporomandibular joint, cephalometric, salivary gland and cross-sectional imaging
  2. To comply with the Trusts infection control policy as there is some contact withsaliva/blood. There is contact with contaminated x-ray accessories.
  3. To adhere to COSSH procedures as there is contact with hazardous substances, i.e.;fixer and developer chemicals.
  4. Teach dental radiography to various dental professionals. This constitutes a key part ofthe post and entails tutorials, practical demonstrations, training and assessments for thefollowing groups:
    • Dental undergraduates, dental hygienists/therapists, and dental surgery assistantsfrom within the hospital.
    • BCU radiography students, qualified radiographers from other hospitals, and dentalsurgery assistants from various colleges around Birmingham that are now runningradiography courses in line with the IR(ME)R 2000 regulations.
    • Postgraduate dentists doing update courses.
  5. Help identify training needs and assist in developing training programmes for thesegroups.
  6. Use the red dot system to identify radiographs that may need reporting by theradiologist, prepare them for reporting, and ensure any recommendations are followedup.
  7. As a specialist dental hospital to supply forensic investigation teams with any assistancerequired, e.g. copying of radiographs, dental radiographic techniques, to aid in theidentification of victims of disasters.
  8. Develop and participate in departmental, hospital and outreach centre quality assurance and audit programmes as required.
  9. Participate in on-going training programmes, mandatory and professional CPD.
  10. Communicate effectively with patients to describe what is required of them for therequested examination to be performed.
  11. Support the patient through their treatment in the x-ray department and outreach centre.
  12. Deal with all patients verbal complaints in accordance with trust policies andprocedures.
  13. Participate in regular appraisals with their manager and identify performance standardsof the post. Help identify own training and developmental needs, to meet thesestandards.
  14. Work in accordance with Health and Safety regulations (including IR(ME)R 2000,IRR99, and COSHH)., departmental policies, procedures and local rules. Comply withthe policies, procedures and regulations issued by trust and the Data Protection Act.

Management/Leadership

  1. To take responsibility for the day to day running of the department in the absence of theSuperintendent Radiographer on a designated rotational basis.
  2. To record and report all breakdowns and faults of equipment to the SuperintendentRadiographer
  3. To record and report all defects and breakages of fixtures and fittings and takeappropriate action to instigate repair.
  4. To ensure that high standards of cleanliness of the environment and equipment aremaintained.
  5. To ensure that pharmaceutical, disposable and other store items in the X-rayDepartment and Outreach Centre are maintained at an adequate but economical level.
  6. To report any accident or injury occurring in the X-ray Department and the OutreachCentre to the Superintendent Radiographer.
  7. To maintain and ensure others maintain a safe, clean and tidy environment.
  8. To act at all times with consideration for the safety and welfare of patients, visitors andstaff.
  9. To ensure that during the course of work, adequate protection is given to him/herself,patients and other members of staff against exposure to ionising radiation and inparticular, to ensure that no unauthorised persons or equipment is allowed into theexamination room.
  10. To be aware of the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act, IR(ME)RRegulations and ensure guidelines are followed.
