Job description

Job responsibilities

Maintain an awareness of the national direction of School Nursing by working within the Clinical Governance regulations and adhere to NMC Code.

To develop effective links with key stakeholders that deliver services, to enable patients to improve their own health and to work closely with the team and local community to plan, develop, implement and maintain services in line with the specification for Birmingham School Health Support Service.

Anticipate and develop priorities for the service, by planning and being sensitive to the changing needs of the population.

To identify and work with vulnerable people / groups and establish opportunities for effective targeting to achieve positive outcomes.

Administer injections with sensitivity and precision, as directed by the Team Leader / clinical practitioner in addition to undertaking screening of height, weight, blood pressure and hearing, placing particular attention to the wellbeing of the child.

Monitors and evaluates standards of care for patients, some with complex needs and to ensure care is catered to patient needs and where at times requires working in an adverse environment and to deliver care effectively and based on evidence based practice.

Implement and monitor action plans following serious / complex patient case evaluation and management reviews.

To be responsible for clinical risk management. To delegate and monitor individual caseloads of team members for effective and timely case load management and report activity data to line management to alert on areas of clinical risk.

Collaborate with other related clinical leads within the organisation to ensure the team works to Trust standards and within policies and guidelines. Ensuring that service delivery is coordinated across the City and that national and local policies are implemented at team level.

Ensure effective and regular communication systems are in place with stakeholders (eg GPs, Schools), providing advice concerning sensitive and complex situations and guidance and support to ensure transparent and consistent delivery of patient care is delivered.

Support equality and diversity when engaging in professional duties and clients and in all other working relationships.

Engage with the Practice Teachers to improve quality of service and practice.

Develop efficient communication systems with all staff to ensure the dissemination of information and encourage staff to put forward ideas and suggestions for continuous improvement.

Provide clinical expertise as a team leader and ensure practice is evidence based.

Provide day to day operational line management duties and responsibilities that include; staff rotas, managing attendance, performance and recording staff absence. Identifying training needs and ensuring all staff attends required training in line with the Knowledge and Skills Outline Framework.

Be responsible for ensuring that all staff is up to date with mandatory and role specific training, to achieve 100% target of all staff.

Act as an exemplar role model to enable staff to develop a professionally accountable approach to work.

Be accountable for Risk Management and Health and Safety of the teams.

Responsible for the Safeguarding of Children by ensuring staff receive Safeguarding supervision and undertake regular monitoring of Child Protection and Active Intervention files.

Ensure all incidents are reported and managed according to the policy, ensuring serious incidents are reported immediately via the Children & Families division management structure.

Responsible for contributing to and implementing action plans following incident reports and health and safety reviews.

Responsible for undertaking research work to investigate areas of adverse service where appropriate for the purpose of service development.

Responsible for the clinical services compliance with local and national policies and protocals.

Ensure local community profile data is used appropriately, in line with GDPR to inform clinical practitioners and to issue prioritisation of key public health services.

Collate and analyse data as required by the commissioning body and carry out audits to demonstrate effectiveness of the service as required.

Be a delegated authorised signatory for staff budget.

Responsible for ensuring that all staff have annual appraisals.

Prioritise and allocate work across the team appropriately to establish equity of workload, working to the strengths of individual team members.

Formulate team action plans to support service delivery.

Regularly review individual performance and ensure team activity and outcomes are maintained.

Facilitate regular team meetings to ensure good communication within the team to foster, maintain and enhance effective working relationships within the team.

Ensure that all team members engage in regular clinical supervision / team reflection.

Ensuring accurate records and systems are maintained including training records and monitored including mandatory & role specific training.

Ensure effective, motivated and competent workforce to facilitate and plan the delivery of high quality client care.

Participate in recruitment and selection of staff.

Responsible for ensuring that new staff attend induction into the service area and trained to maintain accurate and timely nursing care. To ensure full training in the use of IT systems ie PAS & Child Health System.

Responsible for the effective and timely management of complaints.

Ensure all incidents are reported and managed according to the Trusts policies, ensuring serious incidents are reported immediately via the children & families division management structure.

Responsible for contributing to and implementing action plans following incident reports and health and safety review.

To undertake any other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevant line manager.

Responsible for leading on training and development of identified staff.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (Specialist in Public Health, Practitioner School Nursing or significant experience in School Nursing service)
• Educated to degree level or equivalent level of extensive experience
