The Specialty Dentist will teach, supervise and assess undergraduate students in the Birmingham School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT), and provide pastoral support and care to ensure student welfare
Main duties of the job
Supervision of the pre-clinical and clinical activity of the student Dental Hygienists and Therapists within Birmingham Dental Hospital and in Outreach clinics in Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, to ensure treatment protocols, and policies and procedures of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, are followed

Job responsibilities
- To be responsible for the delegation of appropriate clinical tasks to students
- Supervising the assessment and treatment of patients referred to BSDHT
- Preparing and delivery of teaching, lectures and tutorial support to students in line with the outcomes required by the General Dental Council
- Demonstration of operative techniques in the Clinical Skills Suite during the pre-clinical course including basic clinical and instrumentation skills for treatment of adults and children
- Compilation, standard setting and marking of written and practical assessments, in conjunction with other teaching staff of the School
- Participating in the formative and summative assessments of the students by acting as Internal Examiner when required. To attend examination board meetings as required
- Involvement with student welfare and support in conjunction with other staff of the school and the University of Birmingham
- To undertake the management of acute problems for patients whilst under student care and to undertake treatments which are outside the skill and competence of students, which are necessary for the welfare and comfort of the patient
- Supervision of student Dental Hygienists and Therapists during placements in other establishments on the occasions this may be required
- Monitoring the care of equipment and instruments and ensuring adequate cross infection control and standards of professional conduct
- Participation in Audit, Clinical Governance, Continued Professional Development and research
- Acting and reporting on any physical or mental health issue arising in a student which may compromise the welfare of patients
- Acting and reporting on any fitness to practise issue which may compromise the welfare of patients
- To undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post in agreement with the relevant line manager
