Job summary

As part of the Pharmacy & Medicines Optimisation Team the post holder will be providing a range of pharmacy services on behalf of the Trust to its patients and customers. The role provides comprehensive technical support to staff engaged in the provision of pharmaceutical services and an contributes to the development of technical services as appropriate. The post holder will be responsible for the supply of pharmaceuticals to wards, off site units and community clinics.

Main duties of the job

This is a split post that covers both in-patient and community services

The postholder will spend time organising supplies of medication for both the wards and the community services across Birmingham, including doing ward top ups on the West Heath site and at Birmingham Dental Hospital and arranging the transport schedules for the deliveries.

The postholder will be working in a small friendly and supportive team alongside pharmacists, pharmacy assistants and other technicians. The post is based at West Heath hospital but there will be a requirement to travel to other locations across the city on a regular basis. Job responsibilities

Dispensary Services:-

  • Provide dispensing services for inpatients and outpatients within agreed department time frames, discussing necessary information relating to medications.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels in the dispensary, including stock ordering, purchase order processing and stock control.
  • Control and the review of stock levels in the pharmacy and on wards to reflect current and projected usage of medications and equipment.
  • Maintain and develop systems of work which aim to be efficient, safe and error free, including maintaining the dispensary system
  • To be skilled in the operation of computer systems which assist in the tasks to be performed this includes the use of the dispensary management system, EPR & EPMA as well as necessary Office products
  • To undertake additional tasks delegated by the Senior Pharmacy Technicians for both in-patients and community services as appropriate
  • Other duties relevant to the provision and development of technical services as determined by the Service Manager.
  • Contribute to and participate in the technician-accredited checking programme, where appropriate

Support Services:-

  • Responsible for the efficient and timely distribution of medicines to wards, community clinics and other Trust sites
  • Provision of an efficient top-up service to wards, community services and other trust sites
  • Participation in the provision of technical services to peripheral units
  • Development and review of a technician role with wards and departments
  • Responsible for the provision of training and support to student pharmacy technicians, ATOs and Pre-Registration pharmacists
  • Provide input and proactive participation in quality development projects as required
  • Provision and distribution of emergency boxes for appropriate services
  • Take part in the department audit programme as appropriate

  • NVQ level 3, BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or Equivalent
  • Registered with GPHC
  • Up to date CPD Portfolio

  • Worked to standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Desirable

  • Undertaking of audits and other clinical governance projects
