Job responsibilities

Dispensary Services:-

• Provide dispensing services for inpatients and outpatients within agreed department time frames, discussing necessary information relating to medications.
• Maintain adequate stock levels in the dispensary, including stock ordering, purchase order processing and stock control.
• Control and the review of stock levels in the pharmacy and on wards to reflect current and projected usage of medications and equipment.
• Maintain and develop systems of work which aim to be efficient, safe and error free, including maintaining the dispensary system
• To be skilled in the operation of computer systems which assist in the tasks to be performed this includes the use of the dispensary management system, EPR & EPMA as well as necessary Office products
• To undertake additional tasks delegated by the Senior Pharmacy Technicians for both in-patients and community services as appropriate
• Other duties relevant to the provision and development of technical services as determined by the Service Manager.
• Contribute to and participate in the technician-accredited checking programme, where appropriate

Support Services:-

• Responsible for the efficient and timely distribution of medicines to wards, community clinics and other Trust sites
• Provision of an efficient top-up service to wards, community services and other trust sites
• Participation in the provision of technical services to peripheral units
• Development and review of a technician role with wards and departments
• Responsible for the provision of training and support to student pharmacy technicians, ATOs and Pre-Registration pharmacists
• Provide input and proactive participation in quality development projects as required
• Provision and distribution of emergency boxes for appropriate services
• Take part in the department audit programme as appropriate

Person Specification

Qualifications / training

Essential

• NVQ level 3, BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or Equivalent
• Registered with GPHC
• Up to date CPD Portfolio

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Good customer service skills
• Good written and oral communication skills
• Worked to standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Desirable

• Undertaking of audits and other clinical governance projects
• Communication of information to patients and/or carers regarding medicines
• Stock ordering and supply
• Good computer skills

Experience

Essential

• Relevant Experience applying procedures and practises in a busy pharmacy environment

Desirable

• Demonstrate and show understanding different roles and responsibilities of Pharmacy Technicians.
• Relevant experience of working in customer focused or a back-store type facility

Personal Qualities

Essential

• Able to work individually and as part of the medicines management team
• Self-motivated
• Organised and methodical

Desirable

• Able to recognise personal limitations and refer to appropriate person when necessary

Other job requirements

Essential

• Able to work and move around hospital and clinical environments.
• Flexible working between Trust sites.
