Job summary

The Access to Communication and Technology team wish to recruit a Senior Technician to join their large multidisciplinary team including the existing technical services team.

ACT is a specialist Electronic Assistive Technology service, based at the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, Selly Oak, Birmingham B29 6JA. We are commissioned by NHS England to provide specialist assessment of children and adults who require Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), Environmental Control (EC) and computer access.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide technical expertise and support to the ACT clinicians and their clients as a member of the technical team. The primary role for this post is to configure and install equipment, repair existing equipment, mount devices to wheelchairs and perform the annual maintenance including electrical safety testing, generally in domiciliary settings (ie patient's homes). There will also be a requirement to deliver/collect equipment.

This role includes leading on an aspect of the technical service as well as the development of new devices and solutions.

They will also provide line management of 1-3 technicians.

The post holder will have qualifications and experience in electronics or engineering.

They will relate well with people with a disability or those caring for a person with disability.

The post is based at the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre but the post holder will work out in the region so they will need to be able to drive around the region

Qualifications

Essential

  • HND Electronic Engineering, General Engineering or similar qualification or degree or significant experience in one of these areas
  • Good standard of education to GCSE level, including Maths and English
  • Already registered to a relevant Healthcare Science organisation VRCT or AHCS or willing to work towards the requirements for registration

Desirable

  • City and Guilds 2377 PAT Testing Qualification or equivalent

Other requirements

Essential

  • To be independently mobile across Trust and region, including being able to transport heavy equipment
  • Hold a current UK driving licence that is not suspended

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in a technical service offering support to clients with equipment.

Desirable

  • Worked within an Assistive Technology Setting
  • Relevant experience of delivering Planned Preventative Maintenance
  • Relevant experience of testing in clinical environment.

Skills / Knowledge

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office software
  • Able to use hand and power tools for general equipment maintenance. Including soldering
