Band 3 Health Care Assistant Children's Complex Care

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit Band 3 Health Care Assistants. The team supports children with complex health needs in their own homes and schools. We are looking for confident innovative HCA's to join our Children's Complex Care team working across Birmingham.

You will participate in the provision of basic nursing care and specialist care for children who have a range of complex disabilities due to chronic disease, congenital abnormalities, trauma, or who are terminally ill and at the end of their life. The post holder will work as part of the nursing team and supporting the other members of the multi-disciplinary Team. The post holder may be required to work within the service user's home / a hospital / hospice / school, or day centre environment depending upon their individual needs at that time

Main duties of the job

The role involves delivering care to children in a variety of settings, including home and school. The successful candidate will be trained in a variety of clinical skills such as gastrostomy feeding, suction, oxygen therapy using a competency based framework. You will received continued support in the role.

You will need a good level of basic education including computer skills and at least NVQ level 3 in a child or young adult related subject or equivalent level of experience related subject. Experience working with children who are ventilated or have complex health problems would be beneficial but not essential. It is also important the successful candidate is innovative in providing play and learning opportunities for the children.

You will need to be flexible in the community setting and a good team player and be able to develop collaborative working relationships with other healthcare professionals, services and agencies.

Job responsibilities

  1. To assist in the care of children and cater for their individual needs as per the childs individual care plan.
  2. To work under the direction of Childrens Complex Care Nursing Team to provide care in a variety of settings.
  3. To empower children and their relatives to make decisions about their care and to exercise choice.
  4. To report progress of the child and changes in condition to Childrens Complex Care Nursing team.
  5. To participate in the maintenance of agreed Standards for Better Health with other members of the multi disciplinary team.
  6. To keep documentation of care as directed by Childrens Complex Care Nursing Team and to record accurately within the nursing care plan care given.
  7. To maintain good working relationships with the child, family, other carers and colleagues.
  8. To work using own initiative within the childs home / school under minimal supervision.
  9. Work on a rotational basis across care packages as required
  10. To ensure that the childs psychological and social needs are met as well as their physical nursing care.
  11. To participate in the development of the service reinforcing the teams key values.
  12. To receive the appropriate level of training and to act in accordance with the training provided, highlighting any training needs the individual feels they have.
  13. To participate as a team member in the shift rota, working when required and covering for fellow team members if necessary.
  14. To ensure that notification is given to the Childrens Complex Care Nursing Team immediately when a shift cannot be undertaken.
  15. To ensure that service provision to the child is maintained at all times.
  16. To participate in meetings to ensure effective communication is maintained.
  17. To be aware of the procedure for reporting incidents and potential complaints to Childrens Complex Care Nursing Team.
  18. The post holder will comply with Trust Policies, Directorate Procedures, and Health and Safety regulations to ensure effective care and health and safety is maintained.
  19. To attend the Trust Corporate Induction and Mandatory Training updates required by the Trust.
  20. To be aware of responsibilities towards the childs property and valuables.
  21. Complete time sheets and expenses sheets accurately, as instructed on induction, seeking clarification from Senior Staff should difficulties arise
  22. To maintain confidentiality at all times.
