Job Description and Person Specification

The Planned Care Division

The operational and clinical structure of the acute hospital is aligned to the Planned and Unplanned Care Groups.

The Planned Care Group is a diverse collection of services. It encompasses Diagnostic Imaging and Pathology services, Cancer and Outpatients as well as booking services. It also provides acute child and family services including Maternity, SCBU and Childrens Ward. The Care Group includes theatres as well as all the surgical specialties and Anaesthetics. There are four designated acute Planned Care Wards. All the Care Groups services are rated Good by the CQC. Each service within the Care Group is led by a Lead Clinician, along with a senior nurse or AHP and supported by an operational team.

Management of the Care Group is through a Care Group Board, consisting of the Care Group Director, Director of Operations, Associate Director of Operations and Associate Director of Nursing and Director of Midwifery for planned care. The Boards are supported by relevant corporate areas of HR, Quality and Finance.

The Paediatric Service

The post holder will work within Paediatrics providing medical care for children and young people up to the age of 18yrs. The Paediatric department is made up of the Childrens Ward, the Paediatric Assessment Unit and the Childrens Day ward. The Childrens Ward has 10 beds, including one Higher Dependency bed, and co-located next to the inpatient ward is a 3 bedded Paediatric Assessment Unit. The day unit has 6 beds which are used for day case surgical procedures as well as food challenges and other day case procedures. There are excellent facilities within the department. Including a large play-room shared by all three areas, where activities are overseen by our play therapist.

Special Care Baby Unit

The Unit is situated adjacent to both the postnatal ward and to the labour ward, and has 6 cots and a stabilisation area. The unit admits babies of 32-weeks gestation and over, more intensive care is provided by our network tertiary neonatal units in Portsmouth and Southampton. The Unit is an active member of the Thames Valley and Wessex Neonatal Network.

The David Hyde Asthma and Allergy Research Unit

This purpose-built unit has great potential, both locally and nationally, as a research base for allergic disease. Patients can be referred to the Consultant-led outpatient service which is available twice weekly. There are ongoing studies into the development of allergy disease in infancy and childhood.

The Southampton University Hospital and University of Southampton Link

There is a close collaboration between the paediatric staff on the Isle of Wight and the sub specialist staff in Southampton.

Portsmouth University Hospital Trust Link

There is a close working relationship with Portsmouth University Hospital Trust and our Junior doctors rotate throughout the neonatal service to enhance skills and knowledge monthly.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service provides a multi-disciplinary diagnostic, assessment, treatment and advisory consultative service for children and adolescents suffering psychiatric disorders or who show disturbance of behavior, emotional state, or development which is causing serious harm to themselves and/or those caring for them.

Close links are maintained with the Consultant in Child and Family Psychiatrists.
