Job summary

This role is for an 8 PA Older Adult Consultant on G1 ward in Sheffield. At Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, we provide a wide range of mental health, learning disabilities, forensic and specialist services across Sheffield.

Some of our specialist services support people across South Yorkshire and nationally. Every year we support around 55,000 people with mental, physical, and social care needs.

We are a teaching trust and have strong ties with the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and other education organisations working in the region. As a teaching trust we are committed to research and have an active network of clinicians who have a fantastic track record in research including for older adults. We have an active role in research for older adult patients, linking with partners at the acute trust. The older adult services in Sheffield are a cohesive and friendly team, working with partners in primary and secondary care and the voluntary services in Sheffield. We have community mental health teams and the older adult home treatment team co-located in a community base and older adult inpatient liaison based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. We have 2 older adult wards, Dovedale ward caring for those with functional mental illness and G1 ward (this post). G1 ward is predominantly an organic inpatient older adult ward for the assessment and management of challenging behaviour in dementia

Main duties of the job

This is an important post as part of the multidisciplinary team within G1 ward. The post holder will provide vital medical leadership to G1 ward. They will be an advocate for older adults in their service, who will be amongst the most ill and vulnerable patients in the Trust with complex mental health and physical health needs.

They will work with colleagues within the Trust to ensure smooth, effective and purposeful patient journeys. They will liaise with health partners to provide the best outcomes possible and reduce unnecessary lengths of admission.

The post holder will be essential in the provision of medical/psychiatric assessments to inform care planning and risk assessment and the formulation and delivery of appropriate pharmacological and psychological interventions. This will include the assessment and management of people subject to the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act

They will provide vital input into the Team and governance meetings, as well as having a role in Trust and city-wide meetings.

They will have an important role in clinical and educational supervision of resident medical staff and physician assistants. They will also be involved in teaching undergraduate medical students and physician assistant students.
