Dietitian in Community Learning Disabilities

Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic dietitian to join our innovative and friendly Specialist Community Learning Disability Service.

Applicants should have clinical, communication & quality improvement skills to help us ensure that the Service Users receive excellent nutritional care.

You will be working with a wide MDT including Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Art Therapy and Community Nursing.

There will be contact with other dietitians in the trust, post grad training opportunities and regular supervision.

Your role will involve supplying and developing services to service users with Learning disabilities and their carers , working in a variety of settings.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve intervention and development of services in the area of Community Learning Disabilities.

The role involves group work and individualised support for services users . Working on supporting Carers, as well as staff training.

You will:

Determine/diagnose the appropriate dietetic treatment and develop effective management plans in respect of planned medical intervention and prognosis.

Dietetic assessment and calculation of dietetic requirements of referred service users considering medical, biochemical, social, cultural, and psychological factors.

Provide nutrition and dietary advice suitable to the service users medical, biochemical, social and cultural factors which is based on current evidence, incorporating local professional and national guidelines and standards.

Work with service users to enable them to achieve targets overcoming barriers to change including dietary, environmental, and social factors.

Work closely with support staff and carers to provide the skills to support service users in the implementation of advice.

Undertake the assessment of service users using investigative and analytical skills to formulate individual treatment plans

You will establish and maintain effective communication using reasonable adjustments with individuals, and groups about difficult or complex matters by:-

- Establishing rapport and a client centred relationship in order to identify barriers to understanding and implications for change for staff and service users.

Using empathic, motivational, negotiating and cognitive behavioural management skills, with consideration of service user's learning disability and skills, in formulating a plan, establishing change and maintaining change for staff and service users.

  • Familiar with and able to operate all necessary IT packages e.g. email, word, dietary analysis, power point
  • Able to develop educational resources to meet the varying needs of clients and carers which are evidence based
  • Awareness of clinical governance and its implications for dietetics including importance of audit projects
  • Able to manage a caseload with frequently changing priorities, and deal with interruptions
  • Ability to work as an integral member of MDT and as an autonomous practitioner
  • Awareness of legislation relevant to Learning Disabilities

Qualifications

  • 4 year BSc Dietetics or equivalent
  • Current HPC registration
