Job summary

Ensure the provision of Occupational Therapy approaches in the treatment of women with perinatal mental health problems and their families, focusing primarily on the assessment of functional needs and addressing the difficulties found therein.

To manage a mixed caseload of women who are referred to the Perinatal Mental Health Service. This caseload will comprise of service users who this role provides Lead Professional responsibilities for, as well as service users for whom this role will solely be providing OT interventions.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure the provision of Occupational Therapy approaches in the treatment of women with perinatal mental health problems and their families, focusing on the assessment and management of functional needs.
  • Manage a mixed caseload of women referred to the Perinatal Mental Health Service. This caseload will comprise of lead professional responsibilities, as well as providing OT interventions.
  • To carry out assessments, both generic (not OT specific) initial and specialist OT assessments, as indicated.
  • Plan and deliver group and individual interventions in collaboration with the wider MDT and service users and their families.
  • To use evidence based /centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • To regularly supervise Occupational Therapy students on placements.
  • To participate in the planning, development, and evaluation of the Occupational Therapy Service within the Perinatal Mental Health Service
  • To participate in the delivering training and consultancy for therapists and practitioners working with the Perinatal Mental Health Service and beyond.

Job responsibilities

  • To select and apply Occupational Therapy Assessments addressing occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the service user in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure.
  • To undertake generic initial assessments and collaboratively identify with the service users priorities from the MDT including, but not limited specialist OT goals.
  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work.
  • To undertake the OT assessment of service user using investigative and analytical skills to formulate individual treatment plans.
  • To accept clinical responsibility under supervision for a designated generic case load including complex presentations taking on the role of lead professional.
  • To plan and implement service user-centred, trauma informed care for individual and group interventions, using clinical reasoning and a range of treatment interventions to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • To monitor, evaluate progress and modify treatment for service user to ensure effective intervention.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of the effect of disability and recommend adaptations to the service users social and physical environment.
  • To assess the occupational therapy needs of a defined service user group and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment programmes.
  • To work in consultation with other professionals making known concerns regarding safeguarding children and/or adults to the appropriate and responsible service. This includes attending Child Protection Pre-Birth and Review Conferences as appropriate where the child is at risk.
  • To be mindful of the needs of parents and their families from a wide range of racial, cultural, sexual, religious and social backgrounds and to develop, with colleagues, sensitive and innovative ways of meeting these needs.
  • To provide services in working conditions which may be hazardous e.g., exposure to body fluids, aggressive persons, visits to high-risk areas and associated travel risks.
  • To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and work within a legal framework with service user who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To undertake occasional therapeutic moving and handling of service users and equipment, utilising moderate physical effort within clinical and non-clinical settings.

  • To undertake the duty triage system on a rostered basis including management of incoming or onward referrals, assessments, phone calls and psychiatric emergencies.
