Job summary

The post offered is that of a full-time Specialty Doctor in Older Adult Psychiatry, working within the Barnet Memory Service. This is a new and additional post within Older Adult Community Services division. It is a great opportunity to gain a great deal of experience and knowledge working in Older Adult Psychiatry. It has arisen due to additional funding to support and enhance service delivery by Barnet Memory Service due to increased referral rates due to aging population within the borough. The service provides assessments to individuals with cognitive and functioning decline in outpatient setting based at Barnet General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post is full-time for 10 Programmed Activities (PA): 9 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 Supported Professional Actitivies (SPA). The post holder will be supported by two Consultant Psychiatrists working within the Memory Clinic, as well as a team and service manager.

Qualifications and Eligibility

Essential

  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date.
  • Section 12 Approved or eligibility for it.

Desirable

  • MRCPsych (or equivalent)
  • Section 12 MHA Approved
  • Additional degree or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of achievement of CT1 1-3 or equivalent competencies in psychiatry at time of application
  • Training and clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis and management of older adults with cognitive impairment
  • Experience with older adult psychiatry and with working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and Safeguarding Procedures

Desirable

  • Experience in general medicine
  • Experience in teaching with ability to use a wide range of teaching techniques and audio-visual aids
  • Evidence of audit/QI experience

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Excellent clinical skills
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written
  • Familiarity with a wide range of theoretical and clinical approaches.
  • Ability to provide medical leadership to the multi-disciplinary team and to function as an active member of the multi-disciplinary team

  • Clear thoughts on how to involve service users in service development and to provide a service which is experienced as being "service-user friendly"
