Job summary

Join the North Middlesex University Hospital's Mental Health Liaison Service, where you will help transform care for individuals facing mental health challenges. Operating 24/7 under the Core 24 model, our service provides expert assessments and treatments for conditions such as dementia, self-harm, and substance misuse.

As a Mental Health Liaison Service Assistant Psychologist (AP), you will conduct assessments, deliver low-intensity psychological interventions, and support care planning for patients admitted to the hospital. Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team, you will implement short-term, psychologically informed interventions to improve patient well-being and reduce anxiety.

Your role will also involve engaging with health staff and providing teaching and training to enhance their skills in managing mental health co-morbidities. We are looking for a passionate individual eager to make a difference in service users' lives. This is an excellent opportunity to grow your skills while contributing to high-quality mental health care in the community.

Main duties of the job

The role involves providing psychological assessment and care planning for service users in a general hospital setting, particularly on inpatient wards and in the A&E department. A key focus is on assessment, risk management, liaison with external services and carers, as well as delivering low-intensity psychological interventions.

Working in a highly emotionally charged environment, the individual must demonstrate the ability to function both autonomously and as part of a team. This includes collaborating with acute health staff and various care teams, such as medical doctors and nurses, to improve engagement with mental health service users.

The position also entails a commitment to teaching and training, supporting the development and delivery of educational initiatives for both the Mental Health Liaison Service and hospital staff. Strong presentation skills and attention to detail are essential for evaluating interventions and contributing to service initiatives, such as the Frequent Attender Project in the emergency department.

Participation in daily multi-disciplinary team meetings is crucial for promoting psychological insights, formulation and shared risk management, alongside engaging in reflective practice and case discussions facilitated by lead psychologists. The ability to connect socially and engage effectively with others is vital to foster collaboration and support within the team and with service users.
