Job summary

The role of Functional Skills Tutor is to deliver maths and English skills from entry level to Level 2 as well as to provide support for learners in preparation for entering further education or the workplace. You will achieve this through delivering classroom sessions as well as through small group, individual and tailored 1-2-1 support. The work will be based in the Kingswood Centre, which is a vocational and recreation facility shared by the various wards. The post holder will be working in a locked environment with patients detained under The Mental Health Act, 1983 (amended 2007), many of whom suffer from a severe and enduring mental illness and / or learning disability / autism.

The post holder will work as part of the Vocational Services and Kingswood Team and closely with the Occupational Therapy Department providing therapeutic activities for patients within North London Forensic Service based at Chase Farm Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • Identify the individual needs of learners ensuring that all learners have an individual learning plan which links to their long-term employment goals.
  • Continually review learner's progression to ensure that the training continues to meet their identified needs.
  • Preparing, delivering and reviewing lesson plans for all sessions that address the training needs of the group including basic literacy, numeracy, language and other social/employability barriers to employment.
  • Working with colleagues / hosts to assist learner's progression towards qualifications, and movement into employment.
  • To work autonomously with patients and referring Occupational Therapists to identify goals for patients attending art related sessions as part of the overall care-plan.
  • To plan and implement patient centred individual and/or group interventions, using graded activity to achieve educational goals.

  • Advise OT team members on the management of risk
  • Be aware of and ensure the team follows service protocols around risk
  • Alert the Vocational Services Manager of outstanding risk issues to be raised at service level
  • Plan, facilitate and evaluate group and individual work with the client group.
