Job summary

Highview and Aberdeen Park are 24hr staffed, 15 bed mixed community rehabilitation units situated in the London Borough of Islington. The units aim to provide quality rehabilitation and skill development for residents with severe and chronic mental health needs.

Main duties of the job

Residents have often had long or multiple admissions to inpatient care before moving to the units and the occupational therapist role is key for move-in and move-on from the projects. As such the occupational therapist is required to provide detailed assessments using the Model of Human Occupation, alongside graded interventions and group work.

We are looking for a new occupational therapist with excellent communication skills and a clear understanding of the recovery approach in working with people who have long-term mental health needs. The applicant will also require demonstrable experience in effective team working and supporting other staff to implement meaningful care plans

Job responsibilities

To provide expert, autonomous and highly specialist OT clinical practice within a multi-disciplinary team to include:

o Initial assessment and formulation using a range of specialist tools

o Make appropriate judgements about own caseload

o Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in negotiation with service users, carers and other services, considering the needs of a diverse community

o Undertake occupational therapy specific assessment and interventions

o Apply a range of therapeutic modalities, using evidence-based interventions in accordance with the requirements of service line care pathways

o Contribute to multidisciplinary team decisions at the point of transfer and discharge of the service user

o To participate in and provide a specialist occupational therapist perspective to multi-disciplinary team meetings/case discussions

o Maintain contemporaneous records to the standard required by the trust and the relevant professional body

o Assess and manage risk on a continuous basis, in line with trust policy

o Encouraging service users to accept an optimum level of responsibility for their programme of care and with their consent seek the co-operation of family, friends, and carers.

o Support other members of staff in their assessment and management of service user care needs through reviewing initial data collection; monitoring of their progress; feedback; discussion and reports at care reviews with the team.

o To identify carers and to offer carers assessments and review carers care plans

Qualifications

Essential

  • Completed diploma, degree or MSc in Occupational Therapy
  • Current registration with HCPC
  • Evidence of further post-registration relevant training /ongoing academic study relevant to area of practice

SKILLS/ ABILITIES

Essential

  • Able to work autonomously and to deputise for senior staff in a variety of roles when required to do so.
  • Ability to maintain boundaries and form positive therapeutic relationships with service users and carers and staff.
  • Competent using computers and keyboards for entering personally generated data, generating and responding to emails, conducting web searches, storing data and retrieving data, producing reports etc.

EXPERIENCE/ KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience as an occupational therapist working with people with complex mental health and physical health issues in a community care or rehabilitation setting.
  • To demonstrate a sound knowledge and experience of evidence based best practice and research in working with service users with mental health issues
  • Demonstrable advanced understanding and experience of occupational therapy profession specific assessment tools and treatment modalities.
  • Demonstrates practical experience of dealing with the needs of people with complex presentations including people with complex physical health/mobility issues and equipment needs
