Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and experienced psychologist or CBT practitioner with excellent clinical skills and with demonstrated expertise and knowledge of working with people experiencing crisis and other mental health difficulties.

The post holder will work within a third sector crisis house to provide interventions to clients and staff in the crisis house based in Islington. The Highbury Grove Recovery House service provides a safe, homely alternative to psychiatric inpatient admission. It has 12 bedrooms, with staff offering support 24/7/365 days a year, in a welcoming, friendly and non-stigmatising environment, catering for all Service Users needs. The service aims to support and enhance crisis care which is offered by Hestia's experienced Mental Health Recovery workers. The Recovery House will normally offer up to 5-14 day stays for people who present in self defined mental health crisis, usually referred through the crisis team in Islington. The focus of the Recovery House is to support people to utilize their own networks, build resilience and community resources as an alternative to admission to a mental health ward.

Main duties of the job

To support the above aims, Hestia have commissioned specialist psychology/CBT input for the Recovery House. The post holder will provide support to service users and staff which could include, psychological assessment, brief 1:1 crisis focused interventions and group work for recently discharged service users. For staff they will offer consultation to aid psychological care planning to non-psychologist colleagues, training when needed and to provide reflective practice and staff support sessions to MDTs. The post holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines and to the overall framework of the services' policies and procedures, utilising research skills for audit, policy, and service development/quality improvement. The post holder will be expected to offer a trauma informed approach in their work and will be part of a psychology team in the trust crisis services.

Essential

  • Skills in the use of a range of methods of psychological assessment (including psychometric tests), intervention and management for the full range of problems of severity and complexity presented in adult mental health, including challenging behaviours.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral (equivalent) level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society, and registered with HCPC. CBT practitioner accredited by BABCP.
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council as a clinical psychologist, or counselling psychologist, or current registration with BABCP

Desirable

  • Completion of further post-doctoral post-qualification specialist training in areas of practice relevant to the post.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-qualification experience working with service users with severe mental health problems and presenting in acute distress.
  • Significant experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Experience working with services using brief and medium term therapy and group work.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.

Desirable

  • Experience in delivering psychological interventions related to crisis care e.g. DBT
