Job summary

The NHS London Veterans' Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (Op Courage) is a highly specialist community service providing a comprehensive multidisciplinary mental health service to veterans, reservists and their families across the London region.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced SAS doctor with experience and knowledge of working with clients with complex presentations, including trauma, personality disorder and substance misuse, presenting with high levels of risk to self and others. They will need to have a strong commitment to team-work, supervision of multidisciplinary colleagues, and the delivery of high-quality care.

This is an exciting role for an SAS doctor who wants to join an ever-evolving service with an interest in trauma, complex presentations and providing the psychiatric input and supervision to a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, nurses, social workers and peer support workers. Consultant supervision and expertise is available.

Main duties of the job

This post is for 0.2 WTE Staff Psychiatrist within the London Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (Op Courage) and has been created due to increased service demand for psychiatric assessment and management input. The post is based at St Pancras Hospital, 4 St Pancras Way, London, NW1 0PE close to the major transport hubs of King's Cross, St Pancras and Euston and is available from July 2023.

The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service provides mental healthcare for British Armed Forces veterans and those service personnel approaching discharge, regular or reserve, living in London. We provide trauma informed multidisciplinary assessment and treatment including access to specialist psychological therapy, case management and assertive and intensive support in the community if the right help is not available or suitable from local NHS Services. The team includes 2 part time consultant psychiatrists, nurses, counselling and clinical psychologists, social workers,occupational therapists and veteran peer support workers. Together, they offer highly specialist psychological therapies for complicated issues that do not fit neatly into existing NHS mental health services.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will have responsibility for clinical and service aspects of the London NHS Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (Op Courage) together with the consultant psychiatrists and other members of the MDT.They will offer new patient consultations, psychiatry reviews and supervision of case management and provide psychiatric advice and support to other team members as needed.

The post holder will support their peers and team leader and be an effective team member working under the supervision of the lead consultant psychiatrist (line manager).They will have a commitment to collaborative working, actively supporting and liaising with other health and social care professionals and agencies.They will work closely with the team leaders/managers and other MDT members.

The psychiatrists role will be to conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, comprehensive risk assessments, oversee risk management and crisis planning, conduct medication reviews as well as, liaison/consultation with GPs and external services.There may be occasion for domiciliary assessments and reviews. The majority of clinical contacts will be at St Pancras Hospital site or utilizing online face to face platforms (eg. Attend Anywhere). All pharmacological treatments will be recommended by the psychiatrist based on comprehensive assessment and according to British National Formulary and NICE Guidelines.

The post holder will liaise with other NHS, Charitable and MoD Services and advise on formulation and management of complex cases when appropriate, under supervision.The post holder will be supervised on a regular basis by the lead consultant psychiatrist.

  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician

Desirable

  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing

Experience

  • Previous experience in General Adult Psychiatry.
