Women's Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit: Ruby Ward at Highgate Mental Health Centre
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated general adult psychiatrist to join our Hospital Division.
This opportunity is to take up a post as the Consultant Psychiatrist for Ruby Ward, a 12-bed women's PICU.
Ruby Ward is one of ten inpatient mental health wards at the Highgate Mental Health Centre. In December 2023, a new purpose built inpatient mental health unit will open across the road from Highgate Mental Health Centre, which will house a further five in-patient wards. In addition on site there is a Health Based Place of Safety and by the end of 2023, the Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service will be based on site.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a candidate who is clinically skilled in acute psychiatry, with an emphasis on the acute assessment and management of severe mental illness. The post holder must have section 12(2) approval (MHA) and must be an Approved Clinician. The applicant must have CCT in General Adult Psychiatry.
The post holder would join a well-established and friendly team. The post holder would be encouraged to help with service development and to engage in Quality Improvement, with a particular emphasis in reducing restrictive practice and flow.
The post holder would be appointed as a substantive Consultant Psychiatrist with the Trust. The post is in the process of being approved by RCPysch. We would nevertheless appoint substantively to the post whilst going through the RCPsych approval process.

- Medical input, consultation and clinical leadership to the ward team and overall clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the ward
- Responsible Clinician responsibilities with attendance at and report-writing for Mental Health Tribunals and Managers Hearings
- Oversight of physical health care of wards in-patients
- Regular clinical liaison with community Consultants/teams.
- Communication with prison mental health teams (who refer patients for admission to Ruby Ward).
- Close liaison with the relevant Islington and Camden Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Teams and crisis houses who will help to facilitate early discharge of patients back into the community (although this is less relevant in PICU than in other wards).
- Ensuring efficient, timely and high-quality communication takes place with General Practitioners
- Regular clinical supervision of the Physicians Associate, Core Psychiatric and Senior (Higher) Psychiatric Trainees.
- Ensure a program of learning is in place for medical students attached to the ward.
- Assist with Serious Incident investigations when required.
- Support Quality Improvement Projects.
- Provide annual and study leave cover for colleagues
- Attend and participate in Consultants' and Management meetings to keep informed of service issues and developments, including the Clinical Advisory Group, Medical Advisory Group and Unit Discharge Planning Meeting.

Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
- Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
- Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
- Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
- Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor
- Specialist accreditation in General adult Psychiatry (Including CESR equivalent)
Desirable
- Other relevant post-graduate qualification
- Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
- Training as a Consultant mentor

Essential
- Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
- Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders.

- Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
