Job summary

Two CT LAS posts have arisen in the Hospital Division of Camden and Islington NHS Trust to cover two 6 month CT posts.

Both posts are well supported and involve working with well established inpatient teams. There is protected time associated with both posts for CPD. Both posts would particularly suit applicants looking for an 'F3' post in in-patient psychiatry.

Posts:

Post 1: Ruby Ward, HMHC. 12 bed female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. Consultant is Dr Saira Chowdhary.

Post 2: Dunkley Ward, SPH. 17 bed female acute treatment ward. Consultant is Dr Farrah Anwar.

Main duties of the job

Post 1: Ruby Ward, HMHC. 12 bed female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at the Highgate Mental Health Centre. Consultant is Dr Saira Chowdhary. The focus is on assessing and managing women with severe, often treatment-resistant, mental illnesses. Women admitted to Ruby Ward manifest challenging or aggressive behaviours as part of their overall presentation.

Post 2: Dunkley Ward, St Pancras Hospital. 17 bed female acute treatment ward. Consultant is Dr Farrah Anwar. This post involves working in an acute mental health admissions ward. The focus is on assessing and managing women with severe mental illnesses.

Both posts involve being on the out-of-hours CT on-call rota.

The posts are for 6 months, with the possibility of extension for a further 6 months.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Providing a good standard of practice and care
    • Undertake clinical assessment of patients with mental health problems

You will ensure that all new patients admitted under your teams care are fully assessed, including an assessment of their physical state, so that a preliminary formulation of their problems is made, at the latest within two working days of their admission. All in-patients should be reassessed as necessary and no less frequently than once per week, so that an update is made before each main ward round. You will attend ward rounds and CPA meetings. The post holder will liaise with primary and secondary care services regarding clients physical health issues. They will also work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team on a wide variety of psychosocial aspects of client care.

You will maintain accurate, legible, contemporaneous and useful clinical records for all patients in whose care you are involved.

  • Decisions about access to care
    • Use the results of the clinical assessment to ensure effective patient management

Under the supervision of a clinical supervisor, you will prescribe pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for the patients that you are working with. You will refer them promptly to other professionals as discussed with/ directed by your clinical supervisors.

You may see patients who require urgent psychiatric assessment when you are on-call.

You may be expected to undertake one audit or quality improvement project during the six months under the direction of your Supervisor.

You will participate in the teaching of medical students attached to the unit. This will include assisting the bedside teaching of junior and senior medical students by helping identify and consent suitable patients for the students to see, giving shadowing opportunities and by helping the students develop their clinical skills by giving them opportunities to present and discuss the patients they have seen.

You will evaluate your own learning and progress, using self-assessment forms that you may retain in your learning portfolio.

3.7.1 Conduct professional patient relationships

Whenever possible, you will obtain informed consent from patients for whom you provide treatment. You will observe patient confidentiality at all times. When guided by your clinical supervisors, you should share information appropriately with colleagues.

During this placement you will be a full member of team and will attend its weekly meetings. You will discuss your experience of the MDT in meetings with your trainer.

You will cross cover for the other Core Trainee when they are off the ward for leave (of whatever type), maintaining the patients safety and management as our priority.

You will keep clear, accurate and contemporaneous clinical records. You will send regular written reports on patients to general practitioners and other professionals involved in patient care.

  • Appropriately assume, delegate and devolve responsibility for clinical management where necessary, involving other MDT members.
