Main duties of the job

You will already be:

  1. Broadly experienced in all aspect of Community Paediatrics.
  2. Competent in assessing children for suspected abuse and neglect.
  3. Able to diagnose and manage a range of neurodevelopmental problems (including ASD & ADHD) and neurodisability.
  4. Experienced in aspects of child mental health related to child development.

Job responsibilities

The post We are looking to appoint two enthusiastic Community Consultant Paediatricians to join our dynamic Community Paediatrics team in Luton and Bedfordshire. Each post will have a maximum of 10 programmed activities each, and candidates wishing to work part-time are also invited to apply. We are looking for candidates who are experienced in Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics, Neuro-disability and Safeguarding Children. There is potential for taking on or developing a lead role depending on the suitability, experience and interest. There is also opportunity to be the named paediatrician for one of the special schools in Bedford (for children with complex disabilities). The post holders will provide clinical expertise for patient care within the Community Paediatrics service, carry out child protection medical assessments one day a week (working hours only), provide training and supervision to a range of trainees appointed to the department, and contribute to departmental service improvement. Support will be provided to develop further leadership experience. One post will be based at the Child Development Centre (CDC) in Kempston, Bedford, and one will be based at the Edwin Lobo Centre (ELC), Redgrave Gardens, Luton, however there is also opportunity to work across both sites. Both teams work closely with the acute paediatric teams at Bedford Hospital and the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and there are several joint clinics, including neurology and orthopaedics. The Team You will be working closely with our experienced team of Community Paediatricians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, and supported by our Business Support/ Administrative team. On both our sites, we are co-located with our physiotherapy and occupational therapy colleagues, providing further opportunity for multi-disciplinary assessment and management. The Early Intervention skill mix team, comprised of support staff and ASD Specialist Advisory Teachers, is also part of the Community Paediatric Service and supports delivery of our Neurodiversity Early Awareness Pathway- Needs Led Support offer. Main Duties and Responsibilities This is a clinical role, undertaking assessment, formulation and intervention required to deliver the commissioned community paediatric service. The post holders will be working as part of the Specialist Childrens Service multi-disciplinary team and is expected to contribute to the development of best practice through participation in clinical governance activity. There are no out of hours on call requirement for this job. The Community Paediatric commissioned service includes:

  1. Assessment and management of children and young people with developmental impairments, neuro-disability and neurodivergence, including multi-disciplinary assessments (MDA).
  2. Provision of medical assessments and reports for Education, Health and Care Plans.
  3. Child protection medical assessments for physical abuse & neglect.
  4. Adoption medicals and Initial Health Assessments (IHAs) for Children in Care.
Personal and Professional development

The post-holders will be required to be compliant with the GMC relicensing and revalidation process and participate in annual appraisal. Time is allocated within the job plan to support professional activities including CPD. Training and support is available to take on the role as a Medical Appraiser within the Trust.

The post holder must comply with mandatory training provided by the Trust as assessed suitable for the post.

Research & Training We run weekly internal CPD activities, and the department has been involved in several regional and national research projects. There are also educational meetings held jointly with paediatric colleagues at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. The post-holders will be encouraged and supported to undertake audit and research activities. We offer training in Community Paediatrics to a range of trainees from Foundation Year 2 to Grid trainees in Community Paediatrics who rotate every six months. There is opportunity to take on the role of Clinical and/or Educational Supervisor. Compliance with Corporate management The post-holders will be required to work within CCS NHS Trusts management policies and procedures, including those related to safeguarding children. At times clinical work may vary according to the needs of the department. Should this require a new role requiring additional skills, appropriate training and support will be provided. Administrative and clinical duties will be allocated under the direction of the Clinical Lead and will be reflected in the job plan.
