Job responsibilities
To be professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.
To ensure high standards of clinical care for patients and support more junior members of staff to do likewise. At all times post-holder will work within HCPC and CCS guidelines.
To undertake comprehensive assessment of pelvic health patients including those with a complex and multiple comorbidity presentations.
To use investigative and analytical skills to formulate individualised management and treatment plans using clinical reasoning.
To utilise a wide range of treatment skills and options including internal vaginal/ anal equipment and bladder scanning.
To be responsible for the safe and competent use of equipment used within the department or that issued to patients
To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, coordination and palpatory senses for assessment and manual treatment of patients including vaginal and anal examination, therapeutic handling and the use of specialist equipment.
To provide advanced and specific physiotherapy assessment and management of patients which requires post graduate learning and /or experience. These patients will either have uncommon diagnosis or will have had unsuccessful physiotherapy in the past deeming them unsuitable for less experienced physiotherapists to treat.
To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnosis and prognosis in a wide range of complex conditions and to recommend the best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans where appropriate
To be an expert resource for all staff within the department to utilise. Problems patient sessions and joint assessments will be provided for the benefit of patients and to provide learning opportunities for other staff. It is the responsibility of the post holder to maintain this highly specialised level of expertise.
To undertake the measurement and evaluation of current practices though the use and application of evidence-based practice, clinical audit, research and outcome measures
To treat patients in group settings, both face to face and virtually. To be responsible for assessing suitability of patients for group management.
To actively participate in working groups, clinical governance sessions and to contribute to the development of policy changes within pelvic health physiotherapy that will impact on all service users.
To identify and refer to secondary care for further specialist assessment such as urodynamic testing or consultant opinion.
To actively promote positive lifestyle changes and self-management to encourage independence and avoid recurrence of symptoms.
To provide advice, teaching, instruction and training to other professionals to promote understanding of the aims of pelvic health physiotherapy and to ensure a consistence approach to patient care.
Seek to utilise developments in digital technology to provide a high quality and efficient service
To be competent and safe in the use of electrotherapy, bladder ultrasound scanning, gym equipment and walking aids.
To manage and triage referrals received by the service, prioritising them for urgency of input, overseeing the booking of appointments and using initiatives to avoid excessive length of waits for assessments.
To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up to date documentation, in line with legal and departmental requirements.
Organisational
To be responsible for the pelvic health physiotherapy service, and to plan and organise efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time. This includes deciding on priorities for own work area, balancing other patient related and professional demands (plans will often need to be adjusted at short notice due to staff availability or patient demand).To attend meetings and report back as required.To assist the team leads where required in department responsibilities such as annual leave approval and processing, sick leave management, appraisals, recruitment, estates, health and safety, waiting list and rota management, problem solving day-day issues, managing the smooth running of the department, and patient enquires and complaintsTo ensure that, as a senior member of the team, designated staff implement policy and service changes.To be aware of Health and Safety aspects of your work and implement any policies, which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including prompt recording and reporting of accidents to senior staff and ensuring that equipment use is safe.To be actively involved as required in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the business unit.To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in theTo undertake other duties that may be required or are requested by the departmental lead or the business manager
Communication
To communicate clinical information in an understandable way to patients and to assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain co-operation and valid informed consent for treatment. Effective communication requires use of verbal and non-verbal tools to maximise rehabilitation potential, often with unmotivated patients. This can include patients where there are barriers to effective communication e.g. loss of hearing, altered perception, pain, fear etc. Ensure effective utilisation of translator services for patients who do not speak English.Assess capacity, gain valid consent and understanding of patient treatment programmes prior to any intervention, respecting the patients right to decline treatment.To communicate effectively with consultants, doctors, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists from other trusts and other Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) who have referred patients or are involved with the patients care. This can be direct communication or in the form of discharge / progress reports.To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.Contribute to CCS internal communication strategies ensuring effective two-way communication and engagement within the organisation.Contribute to CCS external communication strategies working with the Head of Communications to raise awareness and promote the reputation of CCS services.
People Management
To train, supervise and performance manage more junior staff. This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.To work with other senior team members in addressing the learning needs of staff within the department and organising in-service training and other education as required. This may include training within other parts of the service such as MSK.To partake in clinical supervision according to the CCS Clinical Standards Park guidelines.To ensure that resources are used appropriately and efficiently. This includes staffing, and clinical time.Provide yearly formal appraisals for more junior staff (alongside any appropriate MSK supervisor) with intermediate reviews to assess and progress towards their objectives.To assist in the selection and interviewing process for new staff as require.To be responsible as required for the induction of new staff following department and Trust procedures.To maintain own professional development and requirement to take part in appraisal and KSF process
Clinical and Practice Governance
To accept clinical responsibility for a caseload of patients and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regards to clinical priorities and use of time.To be an active member of the Clinical Governance programme by attendance and delivering presentations/ teaching session and if deemed necessary the attendance of external courses.Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.Any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call or transported, faxed, or transferred electronically must be undertaken with regard to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
