Job summary

Within our team at CWPT we have a great opportunity for two experienced, forward thinking, resilient Band 6 Physiotherapists, with an interest in working in an Acute inpatient mental health team.

The post is to provide physiotherapy intervention for people with a range of mental health conditions. The post will cover psychiatric intensive care units, treatment wards, older adult wards, dementia settings, mental health rehabilitation settings, learning disability units and an eating disorder clinic. We see patients with a wide range of physiotherapy need including mobility and falls, musculo-skeletal injuries, post trauma injuries, some neurological conditions, rehabilitation, and lifestyle interventions including health promotion.

One role will be primarily based at the Caludon Centre, Coventry and One based At St Michael's Hospital Warwick. With some travel around bases in Warwick, Coventry, and Nuneaton.

Car driver is essential.

Main duties of the job

To provide physiotherapy intervention for people with a range of mental health conditions in the Acute inpatient mental health setting.

To provide physiotherapy care to patient in psychiatric intensive care units, treatment wards, older adult wards, dementia settings, mental health rehabilitation settings, learning disability units and an eating disorder clinic.

To be a champion for working towards increasing physical activity on the wards and providing advice around health promotion.

To work as an accountable and autonomous practitioner, holding responsibility for own caseload.

To support and provide clinical supervision of, less experienced physiotherapy staff, members of the AHP team and students.

To deputise for team leaders as required.

To keep accurate records of patient intervention and show an active input into care planning and liaising with the MDT.

The role involves close MDT working and will provide opportunity for development of knowledge and skills around this complex and varied client group. The postholder will be supported by the clinical lead Physiotherapists and the wider AHP team.

Opportunities exist for CPD, with training and development available to enhance knowledge, skills and confidence in working with this client group.

The post holder will :

  1. Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including caseload management and direct clinical care. To work within the HCPC and CSP code of conduct and scope of practise
  2. To gain and record appropriate informed consent from each patient prior to assessment and treatment in accordance with Trust policy
  3. To triage and prioritise Physiotherapy referrals and to undertake comprehensive specialist assessments for clients with complex needs. To interpret clinical and non-clinical information, using clinical reasoning skills to accurately diagnose and develop specific treatment plans
  4. To formulate and deliver individual treatment programmes based on specialist knowledge, evidence-based practise, national and local guidelines using profession-specific clinical skills and techniques (e.g. manual techniques, exercise, electrotherapy, group activities, patient education)
  5. Use highly developed therapeutic handling skills when assessing and treating clients
  6. To identify, formulate, evaluate and document client-centred care plans and demonstrate ongoing assessment and adjustment of treatment plans as appropriate
  7. Contribute to the clinical discharge planning process and onward referral as required
  8. Prioritise urgent or unexpected or planned referrals, adjusting caseloads and allocations to meet revised needs
  9. Assess and record competency of less experienced Physiotherapy staff, members of the AHP team and students, to carry out any delegated or care planned tasks
  10. Identify and manage clinical and other risks. Record near misses and actual events through the incident reporting process.
  11. Conduct risk assessments and maintain a safe working environment.
  12. Adhere to and report on safety and quality (governance) issues, participating in relevant safety and quality forums as appropriate.
  13. Develop own and others skills, knowledge, expertise, ensuring continuous professional development by various methods (e.g. in-service training, workshops, shadowing, 1:1, training courses, peer facilitation) when relevant and appropriate to the needs of the service and funding.
  14. Participate in clinical and managerial supervision with senior clinicians and managers. Actively contribute to the staff appraisal process as appraise, and appraiser as appropriate
  15. Undertake measurement, evaluation and audit of the service to improve quality, standards and contribute to the evidence base. Promptly act on feedback from clients to improve their experience
  16. Maintain accurate and timely electronic records of patient intervention and care plans
  17. Support the training, development, delivery and evaluation of ward Physical Activity interventions
  18. Undertake other duties when requested by professional or operational managers.
