Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as part of the MH Inpatient Services management team and will be responsible to the Head of service for inpatient services. The post is a permanent 8a position and will provide visible operational leadership and hold direct line management responsibilities for the in-patient out flow team and clinical operation functions across all the inpatient treatment pathways and acute out-of-area (OoA) coordinator outreach functions. The post-holder will work closely with the inpatient service matrons and other acute, urgent care and community services to help systematically improve and enhance the effectiveness, quality and safety of care provided within their area of responsibility in a timely manner.

The post holder will provide clinical and managerial leadership to the AAMH Patient Flow and the Clinical Operations teams. This will include both the inflow and outflow teams. A strong working, collaborative relationship within and outside the sub-directorate including urgent care teams, gatekeeping, decision making clinicians, matrons, service managers, the Head of Service and key external partner organisations will be vital.

The success candidate will act professionally at all times working in partnership with colleagues across the organisation and wider system to ensure the delivery of safe and effective patient flow across the whole directorate, but with a day to day operational focus on acute services. The post holder will therefore report to the Head of Service for AAMH inpatient care, but will also work in close collaboration with the managers within acute and community services alike.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be credible as an experienced practitioner with advanced skills in management and assessment of patients. They work in partnership with operational and clinical colleagues, leading day to day decision making and achieving operational priorities.

They will be responsible for the flow of patients into and out of the inpatient setting, while supporting safe discharge and utilising the resources available to maximise effective consistent flow in line with National and local guidelines and targets. The post holder will have line management responsibility and be responsible for the development of staff who work in Patient Flow and Clinical Site Teams, making sure all staff are fully conversant with local and national standards/targets in relation to flow, quality for care and patient experience from admission to discharge from the hospital sites. To deliver improvements in flow, the post holder will need to have a high level of communication skills and experience in positive partnership working as they will lead complex clinical discussions at system level meetings.

They will provide strong visible and professional presence across the main acute sites as well as for the Patient Flow and Clinical Site Teams. They will drive innovation and provide continuous evaluation of practice to ensure patient care and experience is optimised. It will be the responsibility of the post holder to work collaboratively to develop and maintain a Standard Operating Process that reflects the various responsibilities within the team and demonstrates the most effective and efficient use of inpatient beds. With support from the General Manager for Acute Services, they will be operationally responsible for maintaining a zero out of area positive, and ensuring that local patients received care closer to home.

The individual must be organised and structured to prioritise competing demands in often very complex situations. The post holder will manage conflict through conflict resolution which is crucial especially during times of operational crises. The post holder will also work alongside the organisations business continuity teams on Trust wide resilience planning.

This post will also regularly represent the organisation at complex, system-wide operational meetings and must be able to appropriate represent the directorate in such an environment.
