Working as a Dental Nurse within a team to
provide a high level of clinical care within the Community Specialist Dental
Service and support the Dental Officers in all aspects of clinical
practice.
Main duties of the job
To
give support for patients specific to the Community Specialist Dental Service,
this will include patients with learning disabilities, Autism and sensory issues,
complex medical conditions, compromised mobility and severe emotional or mental
health problems.
Specialised duties for
dental nurses within the service include assisting in the provision of
treatment with Relative Analgesia Sedation and General Anaesthetic.
Routine administration and
clerical organisation, including the use of SystmOne for patient appointments
and clinical rotas.
Reception of patients,
preparing them for dental treatment and supervision of patients until they
leave the surgery.
Efficient preparation of
the dental surgery and stock control.
To be responsible for
decontamination and following trust policies and procedures at all times.
To be responsible for
monitoring, care and safe use of dental equipment.
Triaging daily referrals
and analysis options available which are most suited to the patients needs
To
travel to different Community Dental sites when necessary.

transfer of patients with compromised mobility to and from the dental
chair. This can include the use of
specialized equipment such as a hoist; slip sheet, transfer board or Rota
stand. (after appropriate training)
Responsible for
decontamination.
Frequent exposure to high
risk working conditions, body fluids, patients with infectious diseases.
Dealing with potentially harmful chemicals.
Responsible for monitoring,
care and safe use of equipment.
To assist in dental
screening programs.
To take part in dental
training programs and other training as appropriate.
To ensure all mandatory
essential training is carried out.
To ensure all Health and
Safety responsibilities are carried out in line with the Trust requirements.
Sedation and General

To assist the clinician
during conscious sedation, including relative analgesia sedation. (If you do
not hold a Certificate in Conscious Sedation, training and qualification will
be required)
Monitoring of gases and
changing cylinders where appropriate.
Routine daily checks and
regular maintenance of the sedation equipment.
Liaising with the Day
Surgery Team to arrange pre-operative assessments
To work with the theatre
team, assisting the surgeon throughout the dental procedures
Recording patient data and
ensuring holistic care of patients during pre and post- operative periods.
Organizing patient beds and
patient records as appropriate.
Actively involved in
Clinical Governance within the Trust, and following policies and protocols to
improve service provision.
Involvement in Clinical
Audit, both regionally and nationally.
Assist the clinician during
dental screenings and epidemiology surveys, ensuring all paperwork is prepared
and completed.
National Dental Survey is
carried out annually. Staff will be
