Job summary
The Plastic Surgery department is a surgical specialty
within the Surgical Care Group. The unit currently provides Plastic Surgery
services to the population of Durham, Darlington, North Yorkshire, Bishop
Auckland, Sunderland, and South Tyneside. The department works on a hub and
spoke basis with inpatient elective and Trauma work based on the University
Hospital of Durham (UHND) site, day case and outpatient clinics on the Bishop
Auckland and Shotley Bridge sites and outpatient clinics only i
This post has been established on a temporary basis to
support the expansion of activity within the service to manage an increased
demand and backlog of the service. As part of this, a key opportunity for this
role is to support the expansion of Plastic Surgery activity into the Bishop
Integrated Surgical Hub as the trusts aspirant designated elective hub.
The current strategy of the service is the
overall expansion of the services capacity to improve access standards across
the trust.
Main duties of the job
The consultant will form a team of
9 Plastic Surgery Consultants that form the Plastic Surgery Service based at
the University Hospital of North Durham site but service the geography of the
County Durham and Darlington population via the delivery of DCC across multiple
satellite sites.
As a senior clinical leader within
the organisation, this post will lead an acute plastic surgery service;
providing and leading a wide variety of direct clinical care duties across the
CDDFT localities
The post will work incredibly
closely with colleagues across the organisation to ensure timely care for
patients in line and aspiringly exceeding national expectations

holder will be based at University Hospital North Durham but will predominantly
provide a comprehensive Plastic Surgery Service as well as reconstructive
services to the people of South Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington and will
be available for clinical advice. They will be involved, in conjunction with
colleagues in Plastic Surgery, for planning future development in the service.
2. The
Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her
charge and for the proper functioning of the department in which he/she works.
3. For
management purposes and use of resources the post holder will be accountable to
the Clinical Lead of Plastic Surgery and will ensure the effective and
efficient use of resources allocated.
4. The post
holder will be expected to support the Service Management team in matters
associated with patient access to ensure patients within the service do not
exceed national expectations around wait times unless clinically necessary
5. The post
holder will be responsible for the professional and educational supervision of
junior staff.

holder will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical
staff as well as teaching of undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the
training of all grades of staff.
5. Research
activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical
duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available

Committee.
6. Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) the post holder is responsible for ensuring
that he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal and
external. He/she will be expected to attend regularly and contribute to the
weekly half-day educational session held by the Directorate.
7. It is
expected that the post holder will participate in clinical audit.
8. The post
holder will be expected to participate in clinical governance arrangements in
line with national and local guidelines and in respect of undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current best practice.
9. If the
post holder is involved in the care of a patient who subsequently initiates a
claim against the Trust he/she will be expected to provide, free of charge, an
opinion and statement of facts on the case.
10. The
post holder will be expected to deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases
of annual leave, study leave and sickness as far as is practicable and ensure
