Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation trust are seeking a colorectal surgeon
at University Hospital of North Durham.
You will join a team of 12 colorectal consultants providing for a
population of 650,000. The position will include emergency on-call at the UHND
(1:10).
Main duties of the job
This
post is for a Trust Registrar with a special interest in Colorectal Sugery, you
will form part of the Colorectal team initially based at UHND.Working as a
member of the General Surgery Team you will provide a high quality service that
aims to deliver excellent patient care.
You will join a department of 7 Colorectal surgeons and 3 UGI surgeons
providing a broad range of Colorectal
procedures including Cancer, IBD and pelvic floor surgery. This will initially
be a fixed term appointment for 12 months duration, but may be extended.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Duties of the post:
- To staff outpatient clinics which will included new,
review and urgent referrals
- Preparation of patients for theatre and post-operative
care
- Dealing with both routine and emergency attenders
- Assisting in theatre and post-operative care
- Dependant on experience will undertake certain surgical
procedures and minor operations independently.
- Be involved in complex clinical, patient management
problems and inter-disciplinary planning treatment
-Participation in duty rota. 1:10 as part of the middle
grade rota
- Endoscopy - training can be provided to JAG certification
if required.
- A face-to-face handover of care must take place at the
start and end of the day, with written and verbal communication about all
general surgery inpatients.
-Completion of electronic discharge summaries is mandatory
for all patients on the day of discharge.
- Help develop new services where needed.
- Be expected to take an active part in continuing medical
education and undergraduate teaching.
- Full engagement with Clinical Audit and Clinical
Governance is required.
The remainder of the appointee's professional
time will be deployed flexibly on other clinical duties, administration,
teaching, research, clinical audit and other duties (details of this part of
the job plan arrangements are to be agreed with the successful applicant when
in post)
