Job summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly, dedicated team of professionals as a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist -Team Manager. This is a secondment available to a current Band 6 from within the department for a period of 12 months to cover maternity leave. You should be able to demonstrate a broad experience in Clinical Biochemistry at both a technical and theoretical level.

You must have an IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent and hold an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Clinical Biochemistry.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists (Band 6) who are currently studying for and expected to gain a Masters degree in Biomedical Science or HSD in Clinical Chemistry may be considered. Candidates must be able to demonstrate experience at Specialist BMS level (assessed as equivalent at specialist level). Evidence of CPD will be expected to be demonstrated at interview.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will be a Team Leader in Clinical Biochemistry.

They will organise the day to day staffing and duties to ensure a quality service is provided and turn around times met.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also essential as is the ability to work within a team processing a high workload of specimens. You are required to demonstrate precise and accurate work with an ability to prioritise and organise your own work. Experience of HR policies and procedures is an advantage but training and support will be given where needed.

Validation of analysers and IT systems ensuring new processes and equipment are fit for purpose and all documentation is completed is line with ISO15189:2022.

Job responsibilities

The Blood Sciences Department is UKAS accredited and part of your role will be to complete all required quality documentation including training, competency and CPD.

Clinical Biochemistry at CDDFT processes approximately 800,000 samples per year utilising Siemens Advia XPT Chemistry and XPT Centaur systems as well as HbA1c testing, xanthochromia analysis. The laboratory continuously assesses and improves its testing repertoire. The LIMS is provided by Clinisys Winpath.

Experience of the above is advantageous but not essential as all necessary training will be provided.

Main Specialist BMS tasks are

Performing complex analyses

Authorising results, reflexing tests as required, referring abnormals to Consultants.

Ensuring analysers maintained, calibrated and quality controlled and troubleshooting any issues

Providing results in a timely manner in emergency situations, you must be able to prioritise, multi-task, keep calm and have excellent communiation skills in emergency scenarios.

Training and supervising Band 4 and Band 5 staff

The department operates a 24/7 shift system covering dayshifts, late shifts, nightshifts weekends and Bank Holidays which the successful applicant must participate in. There is currently one BMS covering Biochemistry on each site after 2030 and at weekends.

Cross-site cover will be required at the other sites to meet the needs of the service.
