Job summary

The Department of Oral surgery is seeking a substantive full time (10 PA) Consultant to join an enthusiastic and forward-thinking team. The department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and are looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical excellence.

The Department offers a wide range of services to patients with oral and facial problems. The new consultant will help run and develop the service based at Darlington Memorial Hospital. The post-holder will undertake outpatient sessions and theatre sessions at Darlington Memorial Hospital

The applicant will be expected to have a specialist interest and experience in the diagnosis and management of head and neck cancer.

The applicant will have a close working relationship with the MDT and attend weekly MDT meetings.

Main duties of the job

The applicant will:

Be the lead clincian at CDDFT for the delivery of Oral Surgery services

Provide clinical leadership in Oral Surgery for CDDFT with staff and service delivery responsibilities.

Provide Clinical services in Oral Surgery at CDDFT in accordance with Trust guidelines

Participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care

Participate in weekly MDT meetings

Provide supervision to clincial leadeship to clincial colleagues in the oral surgerydepartment

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

Provide High Quality Care to Patients

The post holder must be dentally qualified and maintain GDC specialist registration in Oral surgery and are GDC registered.

To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.

To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.

To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

Performance Management

The post holder will

Work with dental, nursing, clinical and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:

Maintain clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates.

Meet quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.

Participate in financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.

Support improved operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management and utilisation of theatre and day case capacity

Staff Management

The post holder must

Ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior clinical staff and to ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas.

Participate in the recruitment of junior staff as and when required.

Participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.

Be responsible for appraisal of all non-consultant grade oral surgery clincians

Governance

The post holder must

Review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and manage variances.

Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.

Work closely with the General Manager in relation to clinical and services developments including business planning.

Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.

Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior clinical staff and updated on a regular basis.

Keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.

Role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Strategy and Business Planning

The post holder must

Participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the service and Trust where appropriate.

Represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings.

Leadership and Team Working

Demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives.

Work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team
