Job summary
The Plastic Surgery department currently works across
multiple sites providing outpatient clinics in Darlington Memorial Hospital,
the University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital, Shotley
Bridge Hospital, Sedgefield Community Hospital and Chester-le-Street Hospital.
Inpatient and daycase treatment is carried out Darlington Memorial Hospital,
University Hospital North Durham, and Shotley Bridge Hospital. Previous
experience in Plastic Surgery is essential.
The successful candidate will be part of the Plastic Surgery
rota and will cover on calls for emergencies. The candidate will also be
expected to cover elective and emergency inpatient and daycase surgery,
general, and regular ward work.
The successful applicant would be involved in the management
of inpatients, assessing emergencies, and participation in the Trauma component
of the service.
Interested candidates will be supported to
pursue any professional exams they are working towards, as well as educational
opportunities that contribute to ongoing CPD. Involvement in clinical audit is
expected. They would also have access to study leave at par with a trainee at
an equivalent stage of training.
Main duties of the job
Specific duties will include:
Attending
and participating in ward rounds as timetabled
Day to day
management of Plastic Surgery inpatients on ward
Assessing
and managing patients attending the Plastic Surgery Trauma and ED
Attending
and contributing to monthly Clinical Governance and Teaching meetings
Active
involvement in clinical audit activities
Studying
for higher examinations and maintaining continued professional development.
Supervising
and managing junior medical staff and medical students where required

Job responsibilities
Adult inpatient services are provided on two shared wards
with Orthopaedics. Childrens inpatient and daycase services are provided on a
paediatric ward and the department has access to a separate dedicated day
surgery and short stay unit. Inpatient theatre facilities are provided in a
suite of ten operating theatres with patient reception and recovery area. The
Service has up to 4 dedicated theatres on a daily basis within the theatre
complex as well as use of a dedicated Plastics Dressings Clinic. There are, in
addition, dedicated trauma lists during the week as well as access to all day
Saturday and Sunday emergency lists based on clinical priority.
The department provides a wide range surgery, including Hand
Surgery, Breast Reconstruction, Genito-urinary and Penile Cancer, Hypospadias,
Acute Trauma, Lower Limb, Skin Cancer including Sentinel Lymph Node, soft
tissue Head and Neck and Specialist Wound Care.
Outpatient Clinics and Daycase Operating is provided to a
number of peripheral sites and the successful candidate may be expected to
travel. In addition, close ties exist between City Hospitals Sunderland and
UHND for provision of Plastic Surgery.
Outpatient training and experience: Consultants and senior
middle grades conduct daily routine outpatient clinics throughout the week,
providing a valuable opportunity to observe and participate in.
Operating experience: There are regular operating theatre
lists at UHND throughout the week covering a range of sub-specialty operating.
These provide an excellent learning opportunity about the surgical management
of Plastic Surgery patients and some hands-on skills for those with a surgical
interest.
Team-working: Team working in the Plastic Surgery Department
is promoted through monthly multidisciplinary Clinical Governance and Teaching
meetings. Plastic Surgery staff also regularly work closely with cancer
specialist nurses, Dermatology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Paediatrics,
maxillofacial surgery, emergency departments, medical units and ITU/HDU
services.
Clinical Governance & Research: Successful applicants
will be expected to engage in Clinical Governance through participation in morbidity
& mortality meetings and clinical audits. There are often also
opportunities to be involved in recruitment to research studies the department
is participating in, and this can be discussed with the Clinical Governance and
Research Leads.
