Job summary

Our Maternity Team at CDDFT are looking to recruit a dedicated Lead Midwife that can demonstrate expertise to focus and champion on best practice in fetal monitoring.

Improve the practice of monitoring fetal wellbeing

Keep abreast of developments in the field

Consolidate existing knowledge of monitoring fetal wellbeing

Keep abreast of developments in the field

Raise the profile of fetal wellbeing monitoring

Ensure that colleagues engaged in fetal wellbeing monitoring are adequately supported

Network with external units and agencies to learn about and keep abreast of developments in the field, tracking and introducing best practice.

Run regular departmental fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring meetings and cascade training

Lead reviews of cases of adverse outcome involving poor FHR interpretation and practice

Ensure that our maternity service is compliant with the recommendations of Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle 2 and subsequent national guidelines

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will jointly lead, with their counterpart on our sister site, a consistent approach to ensuring all staff receive appropriate training and support in their interpretation and escalation of electronic fetal monitoring. In addition to the teaching element of the role, the candidate will gather information to support audit, both locally and nationally, in line with Saving Babies Lives V3 - elements 2 and 4.

The role requires the candidate to be an active participant of the Patient Safety team, leading on reviews and identifying opportunities for learning.

In addition to this role, the candidate will also perform as a labour ward co-ordiator for 0.5WTE, with the remainder as joint fetal monitoring lead.

Job responsibilities

To lead on improving the standard of intrapartum risk assessment and fetal monitoring, in accordance with element 4 of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle, Version 3 (SBLCB3): Effective fetal monitoring during labour, including Fresh Eyes and Fresh Ears processes and compliance.

To support the implementation of element 3 (SBLCB3): Risk assessment, prevention and surveillance of pregnancies at risk of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and element 3 (SBLCB3): Raising awareness of reduced fetal movement (RFM)

Introduce regional small for gestational age guideline and monitoring of compliance

To lead on the Perinatal Institute Growth Assessment Protocol (GAP); conduct root cause analysis of missed FGR and compile quarterly audit reports

To identify the development and training needs around fetal monitoring within designated clinical areas according to individual needs and service requirements

Facilitate an education programmed aimed at equipping midwives and Obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in identifying fetal well-being, potential fetal compromise and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision making

Engage in the regional development of physiological CTG interpretation; to take a lead role in the clinical teaching of this at Trust level

Develop staffs awareness in recognizing factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocography (CTG) and impaired clinical decision making

Ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation and stage of labour.

Develop midwives' competence and confidence in undertaking intelligent intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart in low risk women as per the Trust and national guidance. Ensure staff can intelligently auscultate the fetal heart in labour and increase confidence in staff in auscultating the fetal heart intermittently through the introduction and use of a Fresh Ears process

Review and support with current training packages and educational resources

Be innovative in approach to teaching methods and learning experiences

Participate in curriculum development and joint professional development activities with other agencies to maximise learning opportunities
