Job summary

The Alcohol Liason Nurse is a new & exciting role within the Alcohol Care Team, which provides care and treatment for patients with alcohol misuse issues in a hospital environment. They will assess the needs of the individual patient and deliver appropriate psycho-social interventions. They will be responsible for managing a caseload of individual patients who are not engaging in the community but continue to come to hospital.

The Alcohol Liason Nurse will be flexible to meet the needs of the team and will demonstrate knowledge, expertise and passion in working within the speciality of alcohol misuse. The assessments will be undertaken under the direct supervision of the Lead Alcohol Care Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Job is temporary for 2 year but we are working hard to secure more funding to extend this as a permanent role.

Main duties of the job

Develop therapeutic relationships with patients.

Have knowledge of the impact excessive alcohol consumption has on physical, mental health and social issues. Use this knowledge to fully assess patients.

Provide brief interventions, psycho-social interventions and motivational interviewing as appropriate.

Screen patients to identify those at risk from alcohol related health and social problems and those whose health is being damaged by alcohol.

Support friends and families, struggling to cope with a loved ones alcohol misuse.

Support other members in the Alcohol Team in the care and management of intoxicated patients and patients in acute alcohol withdrawal.

Make accurate assessments of the risk patients pose to themselves and others taking necessary action within Trust safeguarding guidelines.

Make appropriate referrals/signpost into community services.

Have the ability to be flexible and to manage your workload effectively.

Demonstrate an ability to work under pressure.

Escalate any concerns in a timely manner.

Display excellent verbal and written communication skills, be computer literate.

Keep timely accurate records of interventions, using the Trusts
