Main duties of the job

Environmental Support Worker are part of our operating team who support the theatre staff. In this role, you will:

There will be a rotation of shifts, including weekends.

Job responsibilities

In this role, you will:

Maintain Theatre Cleanliness & Standards

  • Carry out cleaning of theatres and associated areas in line with Trust policies and infection control standards.
  • Complete and record cleaning schedules accurately.
  • Inspect areas to ensure standards are met and escalate any issues to the Theatre Coordinator.
  • Support HCIA audits and contribute to continuous improvement.

Support a Safe Environment

  • Monitor theatre areas for environmental or safety issues and ensure faults are recorded and escalated.
  • Complete Datix reports where required.
  • Adhere to Health & Safety and infection control guidelines at all times.

Equipment & Ancillary Area Cleaning

  • Clean medical equipment according to manufacturers instructions and Trust procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of storerooms, kitchens, and nonclinical fridges.
  • Ensure all documentation and checklists are completed.

Suction & Gas Cylinder Checks

  • Replace and dispose of suction canisters safely.
  • Check, store and replenish gas cylinders, ensuring adequate supply for daily theatre use.
  • Report any irregularities or safety concerns promptly.

Waste Management

  • Work with portering and ancillary teams to ensure correct waste segregation and disposal.
  • Support inspections of dirty returns areas and escalate concerns.
  • Follow Trust protocols for sharps, needlestick incidents and body fluid contamination.

Communication & Team Support

  • Communicate effectively with theatre staff about cleanliness, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Ensure concerns are escalated appropriately through the Theatre Coordinator.

Training & Personal Development

  • Participate in appraisal and maintain a personal development plan.
  • Complete mandatory training and maintain competency with relevant equipment.
