Job summary

Are you a passionate midwife looking to combine clinical practice with research? Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) are offering an exciting joint opportunity for a Clinical Academic Midwife & Research Associate to join our team.

This unique role is split between clinical practice within maternity services at LTH and academic research within UCLan's internationally recognised Research in Childbirth and Health (ReaCH) group. You will contribute to high-quality, evidence-based care for women and families while advancing midwifery research that shapes future practice

Main duties of the job

What you'll do

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and personalised midwifery care across all service areas.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to colleagues and students.
  • Contribute to ReaCH's research portfolio, including grant writing, publications, and knowledge exchange.
  • Network regionally, nationally, and internationally to build research capacity.
  • Support education and training for midwives and multidisciplinary teams

  • Demonstrate fulfilment of Band 5 preceptorship and progression to band 6.
  • Awareness of changes within midwifery practice
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of coordinating a team

Desirable

  • Basic understanding of finance management from a clinical perspective
  • Evidence of innovation in practice.
  • A record of successful research publication and/or knowledge exchange in midwifery.
  • Experience of fostering research collaboration across higher education and clinical settings.

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Registered Midwife with valid NMC registration
  • NMC recognised mentorship qualification
  • Full membership of relevant accredited bodies.
  • A higher degree in a specific topic relevant to the post.
  • Evidence of continuing professional education or development since qualifying.
  • Up to date with all essential training and appraisal.

Desirable

  • A PhD or equivalent achieved or in progress.
  • Leadership course
  • Management course
  • NIPE qualification or willingness to work towards
