Job summary

This advert is to recruit for a consultant post in paediatric neurology working alongside 2 other consultants. There is the intention to develop and expand the service in the next few years.

The post-holder will work as part of the paediatric neurology team providing specialist services to the local population and to the Lancashire and South Cumbria region. The service is provided on a patch based system, and this post would take the lead for the provision of tertiary paediatric neurology services in Preston. The post holder would be expected to take the lead for the epilepsy service, including the ketogenic diet service, and other specialist interests would be welcome.

There is no on call commitment at Royal Preston Hospital, but the post contributes to the out of hours service at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital through a hot week system (4 times a year). There will also be 2 monthly clinics at RMCH.

Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate education and training is expected, and there is an opportunity to take part in research.

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will take the lead for our regional epilepsy service, including the monthly ketogenic diet clinic and to lead on tone management. The post includes taking part in the out of hours hot week rota at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, for 6 weeks a year.

Main duties of the job

This post is 10PAs. The job plan will be discussed and agreed with the Clinical Director prior to starting the post and every year.

The post holder will provide a general paediatric neurology service to children living in Preston, while also taking the lead for epilepsy. This will include the running of the ketogenic diet clinic and supervision of children who have a Vagal Nerve Stimulator. The on call requirement is provided as a hot week providing 24/7 cover from Monday to Monday, excluding Thursdays for 5 weeks a year at RMCH. During those weeks there is no clinical commitment to Preston and no outpatient clinics.

About us

You will join a thriving paediatric department comprising of 26 WTE Consultants, including 2 Paediatric Neurologists, 6 WTE Consultant Community Paediatricians and 6 Neonatologists. The post is based at Royal Preston Hospital but also linking closely with Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

The department is increasing its commitment to medical student teaching, being seconded to the Trust from the University of Manchester. Considerable opportunities exist for research and development within the Trust. Preston has a track record for research in children, working in close collaboration with the regional universities. We carry a number of portfolio studies and hold nearly £800.000 in project grants. LTHTR also runs a number of managerial courses to further develop leadership skills.
