Job summary
Neurosurgical High Care Unit is a mixed, 10 bedded area, 1:4 nursing & a diverse mix of acuity and dependency
We provide care & treatment for patients, who have Neurosurgical conditions, such as brain & spinal tumours, subarachnoid haemorrhages, acquired brain injuries & complex spinal disorders
We care for a wide variety of patients, & their families, many of whom are stepping down from Critical Care. They often have complex needs including traches, NGT's, arterial lines, EVD's & ICP monitoring.
Main duties of the job
The Nursing role involves the assessment, care & recovery of patients undergoing a variety of elective & emergency Neurosurgical procedures. The Team works closely with specialist colleagues from the Tracheostomy Ward Round, Speech & Language, OT, Physio & Dieticians to ensure our patients receive the best care possible. The work is varied & at times complex & challenging

- Appropriate NMC Registration
- RN1, RN2 General Nursing Posts ,RN8 or RNC Children's Nursing Posts
- Diploma in Nursing
- NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
- Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
Desirable
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
- Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
- Demonstrates competency during internship
Desirable
- Knowledge of ethical issues
- Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
- Knowledge of Leadership and Management
- Research and Development
