Job summary
You will work with the Specialist Midwife for Public Health and other team members to promote the general health and wellbeing of service users and their families accessing maternity care at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust by offering healthy lifestyle advice and support during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
As well as offering advice and support with healthy lifestyles including, nutrition, exercise, vaccinations, baby care and safer sleeping for new-borns the post holder will be key to implementing individualised stop smoking support to women and families in a flexible and innovative way. Providing intermediate stop smoking support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using the support of interventions such as carbon monoxide monitoring and Nicotine Replacement Therapy. This also includes undertaking delivery of the Smokefree pregnancy incentive scheme with those women and families who meet the criteria, along with administration of the smokefree pregnancy data collection and collation.
This post contributes to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting families. It focuses on engaging with families in communities by offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieving their own choices and goals. This will involve working in both hospital and community settings with minimal, indirect supervision, operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work.
Main duties of the job
- Provide general healthy lifestyle advice and support to service users and their families. This will include individual and group-based interventions, signposting and referring to other health, community, and voluntary services.
- Plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support including advice on stop smoking medications. This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues
- Identify and approach women who are eligible for tobacco dependence conversations and treatment in a variety of different settings.
- Participate in educating pregnant women about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those women wanting to quit.

Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and following birth.

Deliver Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) in line with relevant protocols and guidelines.

Play an active role in the development of the Smoke Free service targets and work collaboratively with team members to share best practice and information on how to achieve these.

We are looking for self-motivated enthusiastic individuals to join our Maternity Public Health Team. You will need to have excellent team working skills and the ability to support and motivate others whilst managing your own workload. Experience in working in a health care setting or delivering health promotion will be beneficial.
You will support the clinical teams in maternity services providing advice about healthy lifestyles, diet, exercise, weight management and stopping smoking. We are looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our Maternity Public Health Team. As part of this team, you will be instrumental in setting up and running the new in-house stop smoking service with support from the Specialist Midwife for Public Health. This will include providing nicotine replacement therapy to women who wish to give up smoking during pregnancy and following birth.
