The cancer centre at Lancashire Teaching Hospital has an exciting opportunity to develop a highly skilled and motivated AdvancedSpecialistPractitioner (ASP) to work within our well-established ASP acute oncology team. This is an exciting development opportunity for individuals with experience in oncology/urology and general medical management, to develop specialist, advanced skills in the management of oncology patients, supported with academic learning and clinical supervision.
This workforce innovation will encompass clinical assessment and management of acute oncology patients experiencing complications of systemic anti-cancer treatment and/or complications of cancer. You will be working within the specialty of oncology, acute oncology hot clinic, ward reviews and outpatient uro-oncology clinics. You will have significant oncology and leadership experience and a willingness to undertake further study.
We welcome applications from either qualified advanced specialist practitioners or training posts.
Trainees will be on AfCband 8a, using Annex 21 whilst training, which will be reviewed and increased to a full band 8a once the MSc, specific competencies relating to oncology and a period of consolidation/internship are completed.
Main duties of the job
To practice autonomously with a high level of accountability at a specialist clinical level in the direct delivery of high quality care, making critical clinical decisions based on specialist clinical skills assessment.
Plan and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with others and delegating and referring as appropriate to optimise health outcomes and resource use, as well as providing direct support to patients and clients.
To provide clear leadership and direction to support both the medical and nursing teams acting as a role model for the Trust, presenting a positive image to patients and staff.
Advocate and contribute to the development of an organisational culture that supports continuous learning and development, evidence-based practice and successionplanning.
Critically engage in research activity, adhering to good research practice guidance, so that evidence based strategies are developed and applied to enhance quality, safety, productivity and value for money.

Advanced clinical practice is delivered by experienced, registered health care practitioners. It is a level of practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. This is underpinned by a masters level award or equivalent that encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research, with demonstration of core capabilities and oncology clinical competence.
Advanced clinical practice embodies the ability to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families and carers. It includes the analysis and synthesis of complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to enhance peoples experience and improve outcomes.
This Advanced Specialist Practitioner (ASPs) role is to enhance capacity and capability within the oncology multi-professional team. This is to improve clinical continuity, provide more patient-focused care, enhance the multi-professional team and help to provide safe, accessible and high quality care for patients.
The role is part of Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance (L & SCCA) and Integrated Care System (ICS) cohort of Advanced Specialist Practitioners for oncology working in partnership with medical colleagues to cover the care of oncology patients in both the ambulatory care setting i.e. Outpatients with a specific focus in uro-oncology clinics, hot clinic, and chemotherapy day case unit cover a varied shift pattern and service; and inpatient review across the Trust. You will be utilising advanced skills and knowledge to support patients throughout the oncology pathways, following Trust and speciality guidelines and supported by registrar and consultant colleagues. The role is a static component of the medical staff rota and will contribute to, promote, educate and maintain high professional standards within the oncology speciality of the surgical division by being a catalyst for change and service development.
The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care, demonstrated through a portfolio of evidence and clinical competence relevant to the role and supported with an appropriate MSc programme. The role will be required to undertake procedures autonomously, run clinics, prescribing chemotherapy, reviewing patients presenting unwell and function at an advanced level within the oncology MDTs at Trust, ICS and L & SCCA levels. The role supports the Hospital Trust in achieving Cancer Waiting Times.
You will monitor and lead improvements to standards of care and the adherence to oncology guidelines through, supervision of practice, clinical audit, and evidence based practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership.
You will lead the implementation of relevant research into practice contributing to the further development of the evidence base through research and audit. You will contribute to clinical governance within the service by leading audit and research as part of the MDT within the area of expertise.
