Job summary

We are seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow in Neonates.

This post forms part of the Lancashire teaching hospitals Overseas Registrar Development and Recruitment Program (ORDeR Program).

This is a program which is recognised by the GMC and to which (if required) the trust can sponsor successful candidates to gain their GMC registration through trust sponsorship.

The successful candidate will be based mainly in the neonatal unit at Royal Preston Hospital which is one of the tertiary Centre for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Neonatal Network.There are over 4000 deliveries with six intensive care cots, 8 HDU cots and 14 SCBU cots.

There is a dedicated consultant of the week system for the neonatal unit with daily consultant led ward rounds. There is also a dedicated consultant on-call for the neonatal unit with separate middle grade tier for the neonatal unit and general Paediatrics.

We are an enthusiastic and a friendly team dedicated to provide high quality care to our patients and the successful candidate would be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. There is also close liaison with the neighbouring neonatal networks.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties will comprise routine and out of hours acute cover within the Neonatal Services. The work will be based on a full shift system, sharing the rota with the ST3 -7 and equivalent trainee doctors. The number of doctors participating in the shift system on the neonatal unit will be seven doctors with resident consultants covering some night shifts.

Duties include attending to neonates admitted to the unit, conducting ward rounds, assisting and supervising the tier 1 (ST1-2/FY2) doctors in managing cases, attending deliveries of extremely premature neonates and high risk deliveries. The post holder would also participate in the out of hours rota.

Training would be provided in all aspects of neonatal medicine including HFOV and nitric oxide therapy.

There are weekly grand rounds, journal clubs, audit meetings and cranial ultrasound teaching sessions. In addition there are also regular perinatal mortality and morbidity meetings with Obstetric colleagues.

There is an active teaching programme within the hospital and good postgraduate library facilities are available. The successful candidates would be encouraged actively to develop an area of interest in neonatal medicine. Hospital accommodation can be arranged if necessary.

  • Eligible for Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Completed one year's internship (which can be multi-specialty) or based solely in one specialty.
  • Minimum 3 years postgraduate training courses completed including one of the following: (delete those not relevant) - Masters in Paediatric medicine (MD) - Diplomate of national Board (DNB) in Paediatric medicine
  • Engaged in medical practice for three out of the last five years Evidence of research and/or publications Application form including the most recent 12 months.
