Research Assistant (Workplace Trauma Support)

Job summary

Staff who work on inpatient mental health wards experience violence, verbal abuse and see patients harming themselves. They also hear about child abuse that patients have experienced in the past. Together, these experiences are known as 'workplace trauma.' The Workplace Trauma project is an NIHR grant exploring the effect of a workplace trauma support intervention on staff working on acute mental health wards.

The post holder will be based within the Research and Innovation Department at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, which hosts a number of large mental health trials and other research studies. The post holder will also have close links with the University of Manchester, School of Health Sciences where the Lead Investigator is based. Both the Trust and the University place a very high value on collaborative working with service users and collaborate with service user groups locally and nationally to support a range of clinical and research initiatives.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a team to recruit and complete assessments with staff and patients on mental health inpatient wards. The project is a collaboration between Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Manchester. The project's Lead Investigator is Professor Katherine Berry.

The rehab division provide inpatient and community services across the GMMH footprint. Our MDT include Medical staff, Nursing staff, Occupational therapists, Psychologists, support workers, specialist housing support.

We offer individualised and personalised care through a recovery focused approach in order to maximise the person's optimum functioning and full potential. In order to achieve this we embrace a positive risk taking approach in order to offer service users choice and control in their care incorporating a harm reduction approach if appropriate. We strive to involve carers/family wherever possible and offer specialised support include peer support to instil hope for recovery.

We will strive to understand our service users stories and make sure all our services are trauma informed.

We aim to assess and enhance service users willingness and readiness to engage in their recovery journey including identifying and working together to overcome barriers.

  • Good honours degree in Psychology(at least 2:1or equivalent) with some knowledge of the subject area

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability and willingness to travel as there is a requirement to travel to different Trust sites and academic establishments within the North West area to attend meetings, to meet with services to promote research, attend venues for conferences, and other activities relevant to this role.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team player and liaise with a variety of other personnel within health and social services and with community members.
  • Ability to work independently on a day-to-ay basis and use own initiative
  • Ability to communicate effectively with service users, relatives, carers, community members and a range of professionals and non-academics (verbally and in writing)
