Job summary

Do you have an interest in working with deaf adults to provide a range of creative, social, physical and educational activities and a passion to share your knowledge and skills with people so they progress in their recovery?

An opportunity has arisen to join the John Denmark Unit team based at Prestwich hospital. The post holder will provide Support, give Time to an allocated group of service users and promote their Recovery.To assist the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) in the care planning process.

The aim of the John Denmark Unit is to support deaf service users, who predominantly use British Sign Language through care pathways that foster a deaf identity, facilitate a positive self-image, increase self-esteem and aid recovery. The unit consists of 18 inpatient beds, 4 female beds and 14 male beds. We require dynamic individual who has an interest and positive attitude to working with deaf adults

You will engage with service users in a positive and professional manner and work closely with the Occupational Therapist and MDT to plan and co-ordinate a programme of therapeutic activities both on and off the ward.

The post will fulfil a key role in implementing discharge plans, as well as planning safe and therapeutic activities within the inpatient unit and in the community, aimed at promoting social inclusion post discharge.

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision of a qualified practitioner the post holder will plan and coordinate and implement a range of individual and group activities designed to meet the needs of the services users.

Contribute to a therapeutic programme, as part of a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team.

Be an excellent communicator and motivator, know how to use time effectively, be empathetic and compassionate.

The post holder will be required to use their initiative when working independently on the unit and are expected to report any clinical progress or change to a qualified practitioner and record findings in electronic care records.

The post holder will demonstrate an attitude which respects and values service users' and their carers.

The post holder will embrace the core values of the Organisation and adopt the principles of the All About Me deaf Recovery model.

The post holder will contribute to ensuring the activity programme operates 7 days a week between the hours of 08:00 and 20:00

  • NVQ Level 2/ Care Certificate or and equivalent level of experience within a care environment or role
  • Experience of working with people who have mental health problems
  • Experience of using activity in a care environment

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare or equivalent
  • British Sign language or deaf awareness qualifications/ training

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of recovery model
  • IT Skills for electronic record keeping
  • Understanding of mental health illness and how this can impact upon peoples ability to maintain their activities of daily living
