Job summary
Priestner's Unit (PICU) is 8 bed unit with 8 beds allocated for female patients. The unit is based at State of the Art, Atherleigh Park Hospital, which opened in 2017 when the unit was relocated from its previous site at Leigh Infirmary. The Unit benefits from individual En-Suite rooms for all patients. There is a separate MDT room for morning meetings and reviews.
Priestner's Unit receives referral both from within and from outside the trust. There is a pathway in place for accepting patients on to the unit and the decision is made in MDT. It is expected that the consultant will provide input in these MDT meetings. There is a pathway in place for patients to step down depending on their clinical need. The ward utilises the recovery pathway and self-harm pathway. MDT works towards a PBS model of care for all patients.
Priestner's Unit is an award-winning unit for managing challenging behaviour (the APT awards of excellence). The Unit is accredited from QNPICU and works alongside the national standards of PICU.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties
- Undertake assessments of referrals/admissions to the service
- Diagnose & formulate management plans in complex presentations
- Provide management in treatment resistant & complex presentations
- Assessment & management of risk including of vulnerability, suicide risk, risks to health & safety and risk of harm to others
- Preparation of Mental Health Review Tribunal & Managers' Hearings reports & attendance at subsequent hearings
- Work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary teams including external partners
- Work in partnership with psychiatrists from partner providers such as Forensic & Rehabilitation.
Leadership role
- To lead clinical decision making in the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high quality care,
- To develop service clinical priorities in line with national & professional guidance & standards,
- To engage with service transformation programmes, including attendance at Consultant meetings for their service & division,
- To contribute to clinical governance & setting of maintain standards both within the Care Group & trust-wide, including clinical audit & service evaluation,
- Commitment to quality improvement both within the Care Group & trust-wide.
