Job summary

The Specialist services are looking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist to the Gardener Unit.

Specialist Children's and Young person Mental Health Medium Secure Inpatient service (CYPMH MSS) at the Gardener Unit is a 10-bedded purpose built forensic inpatient unit for males between 13 and 18 years old. The unit has a prescribed set of physical, relational, and procedural security measures and works together with other national adolescent medium secure services as part of the National Secure Forensic Mental Health Service for Young People clinical management pathway. There is a single national coordinated referral and admission process across this network and teams meet virtually every week to discuss new and existing referrals, their assessment and outcome.

Both services are part of a coordinated national response that evidence equity of provision where predominant need for care and treatment is related to the young person's assessed risk of harm to self and/or others in the context of their mental health.

Main duties of the job

Clinical role

  • Undertake assessments of referrals/ admissions to the service
  • Diagnose and formulate management plans in complex presentations.
  • Provide management in treatment resistant and complex presentations
  • Assessment and management of risk including of vulnerability, suicide risk, risks to health and safety and risk of harm to others.
  • Preparation of Mental Health Review Tribunal and Managers' Hearings reports and attendance at subsequent hearings.
  • Work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary teams including external partners.
  • Work in partnership with psychiatrists from partner providers such as Forensic and Rehabilitation Psychiatrists.

Leadership role

  • Lead clinical decision making in the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high quality care
  • Develop service clinical priorities in line with national and professional guidance and standards
  • Engage with service transformation programmes including attendance at Consultant meetings for their service and directorate.
